Service

For this CAS experience, I joined ActNow, a student-founded NGO that creates blankets using old bedsheets and plastic liners, which are then donated to people in need. The initiative tackles two issues simultaneously—reducing plastic waste and supporting underprivileged communities. I chose this project because I strongly believe in reducing plastic usage and personally make an effort to say no to plastic in my own life.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
One of the main challenges I faced was learning how to repurpose plastic bags and bedsheets into usable blanket liners. This required both patience and adaptability, as I had never worked with these materials in such a way before. Through guidance and repeated practice, I developed new skills in creative reuse and stitching techniques, which I found rewarding.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
The process of creating blankets was time-consuming, especially since it involved multiple steps: collecting materials, preparing them, and stitching them together. Despite the effort required, I stayed committed to attending sessions regularly, motivated by the impact these blankets would have on people in need. Perseverance was key in seeing the project through.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
This project was entirely collaborative, as the blankets could only be made efficiently when everyone worked together. By dividing tasks—such as sorting plastics, cutting, and sewing—we were able to maximize efficiency. I learned how effective communication and teamwork can transform a challenging task into a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
This experience directly links to Climate Action (SDG 13). Plastic pollution is a global issue, and by reusing plastic waste, we are reducing its environmental footprint. At the same time, we addressed another pressing global concern—providing warmth and comfort to those in need. This dual impact reminded me that even small actions can contribute to solving larger issues.

LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Working with ActNow also made me reflect on the ethics of waste and consumerism. Every plastic bag we repurposed represented a choice someone had made to use single-use plastic. By giving these plastics a second life, I realized the importance of responsible consumption and the ethical responsibility we all share in reducing environmental harm.

Reflection:
This CAS experience was deeply meaningful because it combined my personal values with tangible community service. I not only learned practical skills but also strengthened my sense of responsibility toward the environment and society. It reminded me that perseverance, collaboration, and ethical awareness are crucial when working toward social change.
