As a Grade 12 student, I had the opportunity to take part in the Freshers’ Day celebration, a long-standing tradition in our school that warmly welcomes the incoming Grade 11 batch into the IB Diploma Programme. This event is not only about performances but also about fostering a sense of belonging and community across grades. My friends and I performed a parody dance, which demanded not only creativity but also a great deal of physical stamina and coordination. From selecting songs that were socially and culturally appropriate, to designing choreography that was comfortable for everyone, and finally practicing for many hours, this experience truly embodied the essence of CAS Activity.
1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
Through this activity, I discovered that I had strong rhythm, coordination, and the ability to pick up choreography quickly, which made me confident during rehearsals. I also noticed that I was able to motivate others by keeping the energy levels high, which became one of my strengths within the team. However, I recognized the need to further build my endurance and flexibility, as the long hours of practice often left me physically drained and sometimes limited my ability to perform with the same energy throughout. This made me aware that improving my stamina and maintaining consistent fitness are areas where I can continue to grow
2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
The major challenge I faced was ensuring that every member learned at the same pace and that we completed each part of the choreography on time. This required me to be patient, supportive, and encouraging while also learning to balance discipline with flexibility.
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:
Planning was key to our success. We brainstormed songs, ensured they were appropriate, and created choreography that suited everyone’s comfort and ability. I also contributed to organizing practice sessions and encouraging warm-ups so that we were physically prepared.
4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences:
Most of our rehearsals took place during school hours, but since time was limited, we also met on weekends to continue practicing. Balancing these sessions with academics required discipline and perseverance. At times, it was tiring to give up part of the weekend, but staying consistent was important to refine our steps and ensure synchronisation. By putting in this extra effort, I demonstrated commitment to both my team and the performance, which ultimately made our routine stage-ready.
5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
This activity highlighted the importance of teamwork. We adjusted choreography to fit each person’s abilities, learned to compromise, and supported one another whenever energy levels dropped. The collaboration made our final performance much stronger than it could have been individually.
6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:
Music and dance are forms of expression that are often considered universal human languages. As a team, we selected fun songs that were still socially and culturally appropriate for the occasion, and by doing this, we conducted a performance that was both respectful and inclusive, demonstrating that when entertainment is delivered responsibly, it can have global significance.
7. Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
While parody dancing often exaggerates movements, we were careful that our humor remained lighthearted and not offensive. This reminded me of the ethical responsibility performers have in creating a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment for everyone
CONCLUSION
Overall, the Freshers’ Day dance was an enriching CAS Activity that tested my physical strength and stamina, while also sharpening my ability to collaborate and adapt within a team. The long hours of practice—both in school and on weekends—pushed me to stay consistent, disciplined, and physically committed to the performance. Beyond the physical effort, the experience reminded me of the value of teamwork, patience, and respect when creating something together. What made it even more meaningful was the chance to contribute to one of the school’s most cherished traditions: welcoming the new DP batch with energy, humor, and warmth. Being able to play a role in upholding this tradition while challenging myself both physically and personally made the experience truly memorable, and it stands out as one of the most rewarding CAS activities of my journey.
