Organizing the Math Trivia Tournament was a challenging yet rewarding experience that allowed me to apply my creativity and leadership skills while fostering a competitive yet engaging environment for Grade 10 students. Over the course of one month, I worked closely with four of my friends to meticulously plan and execute the event. This experience enabled me to develop valuable skills, confront challenges, and engage with the IB learner profile attributes in a meaningful way.
LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I gained a better understanding of my strengths and areas for improvement. My ability to create engaging and appropriately challenging math questions stood out as a key strength, ensuring that the difficulty level was balanced for all participants. However, I realized that my time management skills needed improvement, particularly in coordinating the timing of rounds and maintaining a smooth flow during the event. Handling crowd dynamics and contestant management was more difficult than anticipated, but it helped me recognize the importance of maintaining clear communication and structured event flow.
LO2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills
One of the most significant challenges was structuring the tournament to be both competitive and fair. Creating a balanced point system that rewarded accuracy while encouraging strategic play required thorough analysis and testing. Additionally, handling unexpected delays and adapting to last-minute changes improved my problem-solving and quick-thinking skills. Ensuring the questions were both accurate and engaging was also more complex than expected, as it required filtering through multiple sources to find relevant and challenging material.
LO3: Demonstrate How to Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience
The planning phase was crucial to the success of the tournament. I created a detailed timeline, assigned tasks to my teammates based on their strengths, and coordinated with teachers for logistical support. Drafting the rules, structuring the rounds, and creating the question sets required strategic planning. I also anticipated potential issues, such as tie-breaker scenarios, and prepared solutions in advance. Coordinating with the core team to manage contestants on stage while maintaining audience engagement required careful preparation and clear communication.

LO4: Show Commitment and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
The tournament’s success was the result of consistent effort and perseverance over several weeks. Balancing schoolwork with the demands of organizing the event was challenging, but my commitment to delivering a quality experience kept me motivated. There were times when miscommunications within the team created setbacks, but I stayed focused, followed up with team members, and adjusted the format when necessary. My determination to see the project through to completion helped me remain calm and focused on the day of the event.
LO5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
While I took the lead in organizing the event, collaboration was essential to its success. I worked closely with my four teammates, teachers, and fellow students to ensure smooth execution. Effective delegation of tasks allowed each member to contribute their strengths—one teammate focused on question design, another managed the scoring system, while others handled logistics and communication. This teamwork ensured that the event ran smoothly and efficiently. The ability to rely on others and delegate tasks effectively strengthened my understanding of the importance of collaboration in project management.
LO6: Demonstrate Engagement with Issues of Global Significance
Mathematics is a universal language that transcends cultural and national boundaries. By organizing a math trivia tournament, I promoted critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills among students. In a world increasingly driven by data and mathematical reasoning, fostering a strong foundation in math is essential for future success. By encouraging students to engage with mathematical concepts in a fun and interactive format, I contributed to promoting a global culture of analytical thinking and problem-solving.
LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Maintaining fairness and integrity throughout the tournament was a top priority. I ensured that the scoring system was transparent and that all participants had equal access to resources and opportunities. When disputes arose over question clarity or scoring, I made impartial and ethical decisions to resolve conflicts. Ensuring that all contestants were treated fairly and with respect reinforced the importance of honesty, transparency, and sportsmanship in competitive environments.

IB Learner Profile Attributes
Through organizing the Math Trivia Tournament, I embodied several key IB learner profile attributes. As an Inquirer, I demonstrated curiosity and a desire to deepen my understanding of mathematical concepts while designing diverse and challenging questions. The complexity of structuring the event and handling real-time challenges required me to be a Thinker, applying strategic problem-solving to ensure a fair and engaging competition. Crafting the questions and understanding the scoring system allowed me to become more Knowledgeable about mathematical theories and their practical application. Effective communication was crucial, whether it was coordinating with teammates, guiding contestants, or addressing the audience, helping me develop as a Communicator. Upholding fairness and integrity in scoring decisions and resolving disputes required me to act as a Principled leader, making unbiased and transparent decisions. Taking on the responsibility of organizing a large-scale event and managing high-pressure situations pushed me to be a Risk-taker, stepping out of my comfort zone with confidence. Finally, balancing the demands of planning the tournament alongside my academic commitments helped me become more Balanced, managing my time and energy effectively to succeed in both areas.
