During the Pi Day celebration at my school, I had the opportunity to set up and manage a stall based on the theme of paradoxes. Along with two of my friends, we organized a fun and educational activity for the 9th and 11th graders. Our stall featured thought-provoking paradox questions that challenged the contestants’ logical thinking. The first participant to correctly answer a question earned a chance to knock down a tower of cups. The thrill of the competition, coupled with the exploration of paradoxes, made the experience both educational and engaging.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process
Planning and running a paradox-themed stall came with its challenges. Formulating questions that were both stimulating and accessible to different grade levels required careful thought. Additionally, managing the crowd and maintaining the energy of the event was physically and mentally demanding. Through this experience, I developed stronger communication and problem-solving skills. I also learned to adapt quickly by simplifying complex concepts when contestants found questions too difficult.
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate How to Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience
Initiating and planning the stall required brainstorming questions, setting up the game mechanics, and ensuring smooth logistics. My friends and I collaborated to gather the necessary materials, construct the cup tower, and refine the question format. We also devised a system for fair gameplay and prize distribution. This experience enhanced my organizational and leadership skills, as I played a key role in making sure the stall was enjoyable and effective.
Learning Outcome 4: Show Commitment to and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
Throughout the event, I remained dedicated to ensuring the contestants had a memorable learning experience. Despite moments of fatigue and the constant influx of participants, I stayed engaged and enthusiastic. Explaining paradoxes repeatedly to different groups required patience and perseverance. However, witnessing the excitement and curiosity on the participants’ faces made the effort worthwhile.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
This CAS experience was a testament to the power of teamwork. My friends and I worked seamlessly, dividing responsibilities to ensure everything ran smoothly. While one of us presented the paradoxes, another managed the crowd, and the third oversaw the cup tower challenge. Our collaborative efforts allowed us to manage the large number of participants efficiently and create an enjoyable experience for all.
Learner Profile Attributes: Communicator, Inquirer
Through this experience, I demonstrated strong communication skills by explaining complex paradoxes in an engaging and understandable manner. Adjusting my explanations based on the contestants’ responses helped facilitate meaningful discussions about the contradictory nature of paradoxes and their importance in mathematics. Additionally, the event nurtured my curiosity as I further explored the nuances of paradoxes to ensure I could answer any follow-up questions from participants.
In conclusion, participating in the Pi Day event by organizing a paradox-themed stall was a fulfilling experience that strengthened my leadership, problem-solving, and communication abilities. It also deepened my appreciation for the role of paradoxes in fostering critical thinking. This experience reaffirmed the importance of collaboration and perseverance in creating successful learning opportunities for others.
