Community Service – Frisbee – Service

As a part of my CAS journey, I volunteered for the Community Service which started in August and ended in mid-September. In this service, students from multiple local schools came to our school and learned different activities, games or knowledge, which were not available in their schools.

This proved to be an opportunity for me as I identified my own strengths and weaknesses in Frisbee. This gave me an opportunity to teach students Frisbee. I learned that playing Frisbee is much easier than teaching it as the students were of lower grades (from Grade 1 to Grade 6).

Learning Outcome 1 : Identify own Strengths develop areas for Growth

My Strength in this experience was that I know how to play Frisbee and I can teach others how to play the sport. In the process, I also learned that you need more than 100% accuracy for small children as they do not know the sport properly and they need the throws directly in their hands. I developed my accuracy simultaneously while teaching the children to throw and catch Frisbee.

Learning Outcome 4 : Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

I was committed in this experience and it is very evident as I taught everyone who came to me according to their needs. For example, some kids wanted to learn how to throw, some wanted to learn how to catch, and others wanted to learn the footwork while throwing or catching. I was able to help everyone accordingly and they were very happy learning the new sport.

Learning Outcome 5 : Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Since, there were tons of children who come to learn Frisbee, we worked together and made multiple groups to give them equal attention and they were able to learn effectively. Also, they enjoyed the games and drills that we made them play. If they are not enjoying the drills or games, we held a competition unrelated to real Frisbee to refresh their minds.

Learning Outcome 7 : Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Since, they were students of government school, we talked to them in our mother tongue which made them feel included and comfortable for the conversations. Some of them didn’t know the mother tongue fluently, so we conversed with them in Hindi as they know Hindi well and felt comfortable while talking.
