For this service experience, we collaborated with Aabal Nahi Sabal, an organization dedicated to providing employment opportunities for individuals with special needs (ages 16+). Our role was to support their efforts by painting bags crafted by neurodivergent individuals, adding artistic value to increase their marketability. The goal was to help raise funds for their development while fostering an environment where creativity and productivity intersected. This initiative aimed to challenge societal prejudices by proving that everyone, regardless of ability, deserves meaningful work. Through this experience, I not only contributed to a cause I deeply care about but also learned valuable lessons about inclusivity, teamwork, and perseverance.
LO1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth
Since childhood, I have been passionate about art, and this experience allowed me to use my creative skills for a meaningful purpose. My strength was my ability to paint intricate designs that enhanced the visual appeal of the bags. However, I quickly realized that artistic skills alone weren’t enough—I needed to ensure my designs aligned with what would be most appealing to potential buyers. Balancing artistic creativity with practical marketability was something I had never considered before, and it pushed me to think beyond just aesthetics. Additionally, I became more aware of the importance of patience and adaptability, especially when working in a setting where the goal was to support others rather than just express personal creativity.

LO2: Taking on Challenges and Developing New Skills
One of the biggest challenges I faced was understanding how to make my artistic contributions as effective as possible. While I was comfortable painting, I had to adapt my approach to match the materials we were working with. Some of the bags had rough textures that made painting difficult, requiring me to experiment with different techniques to ensure the colors looked vibrant and long-lasting. Along with this, we had to work with a timeline provided which was difficult to manage alongside other school assignments.

LO4: Demonstrating Perseverance and Commitment
This project required patience and dedication. Painting the bags was a time-consuming process, especially since we wanted to maintain a high standard of quality to increase their value. There were moments when the workload felt overwhelming, especially while balancing other academic and personal commitments. However, I reminded myself of the purpose behind our work—the more effort we put in, the more funds we could help raise for the organization.
Through this experience, I learned the importance of perseverance in community service. Even when the task seemed repetitive or tiring, I stayed committed because I knew my efforts were contributing to a greater cause. By the end of the project, seeing the completed bags ready for sale gave me a deep sense of accomplishment and reinforced the idea that consistent effort leads to meaningful impact.

LO5: Collaboration and Teamwork
Working with a team was essential for the success of this initiative. While I focused on painting, others managed different aspects like organizing materials, coordinating with the organization, and ensuring all bags were prepared for sale. Effective communication played a huge role—we had to discuss design ideas, divide responsibilities, and work efficiently to complete the project on time.
Through this collaboration, I also gained insight into the perspectives of the neurodivergent individuals we were supporting. Their resilience and enthusiasm for crafting showed me that work is not just about productivity; it’s about finding purpose and connection. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of teamwork—not only among volunteers but also between the individuals we were assisting and the community that supports them.

LO6: Engaging with Issues of Global Significance
This experience directly addressed the global issue of employment inequality for neurodivergent and individuals with special needs. Across the world, people with disabilities often face barriers to finding meaningful work due to societal prejudices and a lack of inclusive workspaces. By participating in this initiative, I contributed to raising awareness and advocating for a more inclusive society where everyone is given opportunities to succeed.
Furthermore, this project aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Decent Work and Economic Growth and Reducing Inequality. It made me realize that while small actions—like painting a bag—may seem insignificant, they can collectively lead to larger societal change. This experience deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized communities and strengthened my commitment to promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities.

Final Reflection
This service experience was not just about art—it was about empowerment, inclusion, and breaking societal barriers. Through painting, teamwork, and perseverance, I contributed to a cause that goes beyond creativity. I realized the impact that small efforts can have in creating meaningful opportunities for those who are often overlooked. More importantly, I left with a deeper appreciation for the resilience and potential of neurodivergent individuals and the importance of fostering a world where everyone has the chance to contribute and thrive.
