Global Odyssey – Creativity

The Global Odyssey Event is an annual student-led initiative that fosters entrepreneurship and leadership. It features food, fashion, and fun stalls, where students manage sales, marketing, and customer engagement. G11 students also lead organizing teams like decor, food, fun, and social media, ensuring smooth operations. The event promotes creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving, offering a dynamic, hands-on business experience.

Creativity is at the heart of the Global Odyssey Event, where students come together to craft an engaging, immersive experience that blends business with artistry. Whether through the food stalls, fashion showcases, or interactive fun booths, every aspect of the event demands innovation, problem-solving, and aesthetic design. As the Decor Lead, I had the unique opportunity to shape the event’s visual identity, transforming spaces into vibrant and cohesive settings that enhanced the overall atmosphere. From brainstorming themes to executing design ideas with my team, this experience was a dynamic exercise in both leadership and artistic expression.

LO1 – Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

Stepping into the role of Decor Lead allowed me to recognize both my strengths and areas that needed improvement. My keen eye for design and ability to visualize themes translated well into the planning and execution phases. However, I quickly realized that balancing creativity with practicality was a challenge. Designing visually striking decorations while ensuring they were feasible within time and budget constraints was something I had to refine. Another challenge was collaboration—everyone had different ideas, and it was difficult to align them into a cohesive vision. I had to work on my ability to communicate my ideas clearly while also listening to others and incorporating their input in a way that made sense for the overall decor.

LO2 – Taking on Challenges and Developing New Skills

The scale of this event pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Unlike smaller projects I’ve worked on before, this required managing multiple aspects simultaneously—from material sourcing to coordinating with different teams. One of the biggest challenges was finalizing the theme. With so many creative ideas from the team, it was difficult to narrow them down into one coherent concept. After multiple discussions and compromises, we decided on a pink lemonade theme, which felt vibrant, fresh, and fitting for the event. This process taught me the importance of decision-making in leadership—sometimes, you just have to make the call and move forward confidently.

Another major challenge was time constraints. We only had one month to plan and execute the entire decor plan, which meant working under pressure. I had to develop better time management strategies, ensuring we set deadlines for each stage of the process. Delegation was another skill I had to refine—trusting my team to handle specific aspects of the decor while keeping everything on schedule.

LO3 – Initiating and Planning the Experience

The planning phase was by far one of the most intense aspects of my role. From the outset, I had to establish a clear vision for the decor, create mood boards, and ensure that every design element aligned with the event’s overarching theme. Organizing meetings, setting deadlines, and tracking progress were essential to keeping everything on schedule. One of the biggest learning experiences for me was balancing creativity with feasibility—certain ideas looked amazing in concept but were difficult to execute within our given time and resource constraints.

Completing all the decor work on time was another challenge. The limited timeline meant we couldn’t afford delays, so I had to stay on top of logistics—making sure materials arrived on time, tasks were evenly distributed, and everyone was clear on their responsibilities. Looking back, I realized how crucial prioritization is in event planning. Some elements had to be simplified or adjusted to meet the deadline, but the final result was still visually impactful.

LO5 – Working Collaboratively

This experience reinforced the importance of teamwork. While I had my own creative vision, I had to work closely with other organizing teams, including logistics, food, and fashion, to ensure coherence across the event. Effective communication was crucial—whether it was coordinating with the social media team for promotional aesthetics or working with the fun stalls to integrate themed decor.

Collaboration was not always easy. Since everyone had different ideas, it was difficult to reach a consensus on designs and color schemes. There were moments when discussions became unproductive because of too many conflicting opinions. I had to step up as a leader, guiding the team towards a decision while ensuring everyone felt heard. I learned that in a group setting, you can’t please everyone, but by focusing on the bigger picture and finding common ground, you can move forward effectively.

LO7 – Ethics of Choices and Actions

Being in charge of decor also meant making ethical decisions regarding sustainability and cost. We had to consider whether to use single-use decorations or invest in reusable and recyclable materials. While some budget constraints made it tempting to go for cheaper, disposable options, I made a conscious effort to source environmentally friendly materials. Additionally, ensuring fair workload distribution among my team was another ethical consideration—making sure no one was overburdened and that each member had an opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way.

The Global Odyssey Event was not just a test of my creativity but a real-world exercise in leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration. I walked away with a deeper understanding of how to merge artistic vision with practical execution, how to work effectively within a team, and how to navigate challenges with adaptability. The experience of finalizing the theme, working with differing opinions, and meeting tight deadlines all pushed me to grow in ways I hadn’t expected. Most importantly, this experience reaffirmed my passion for event management and design, reinforcing my ambition to pursue similar roles in the future.
