In four sessions of rock climbing, I took on?a physical challenge that required me to step outside my comfort zone. I focused on training my strength,?endurance, and, developing problem-solving skills that came with overcoming advanced climbing routes. My goal was to boost my confidence in facing physical challenges . It was also?during these sessions that I got to learn more about my physical and mental limitations while striving to improve each time.
LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through my experience with?climbing, I quickly noticed what I was best at — problem-solving of climbing in the sense of what route/hold to take next. But I discovered?one significant weakness: my grip strength was not great, which often meant I would fail to finish a climb. Realizing this has helped me appreciate the importance of grip exercises?and core strength in climbing. Knowing my weaknesses, I have pushed?and tried to build muscle through specific exercise .
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
The worst thing about rock climbing was learning how to?deal with fear, which was especially difficult when I started to encounter heights that I found frightening. The physical difficulty of controlling my focus and my balance as?I pulled myself higher to holds was demanding. While I had never been mountain climbing before, I had done enough basic hiking and outdoor activities that the physical aspect wasn’t completely foreign,?but the technique and mental fortitude was. I overcame this challenge by practicing mindfulness, taking deep breaths, and focusing on each move step by step. By the end of the sessions, I had developed better control over both my body and mind, learning a new skill that will benefit me in future challenges.
LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences Rock climbing demanded a significant amount of perseverance, especially when I faced moments where I couldn’t seem to reach the next hold. There were instances when I wanted to give up, but I pushed through by reminding myself of the commitment I had made to complete the activity. The commitment required to attend all four sessions was crucial because each session built upon the last. At times, I found it difficult to persist, but by sticking with it, I learned the value of consistency and dedication. This experience taught me that perseverance in physical tasks can lead to great improvements.
Through this rock climbing experience, I developed the learner profile characteristics of being a Risk-Taker and Reflective. I was willing to face the challenges of trying something new and stepping outside my comfort zone, and I reflected on how I could improve. This activity linked to my physical education classes as it gave me a hands-on understanding of strength, endurance, and balance. It also helped me connect better with my community by fostering teamwork and trust. The highlight was overcoming the fear of heights and reaching the top of a challenging route for the first time. This experience made me realize that, despite struggles and setbacks, persistence leads to growth. If I were to do it again, I would focus more on technique from the beginning, perhaps by practicing at lower levels before pushing for the harder routes. I will apply the skills I’ve learned in future activities that require physical endurance and teamwork, contributing positively to my physical and mental growth.
