Rural Immersion (Creativity, Activity, and Service)

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

Adapting to an unfamiliar environment can be challenging, especially when one lacks prior exposure and experience. One such challenge I faced during my trip was when we were tasked with painting the walls of a local school. However, there was a catch: the painting had to incorporate intricate details of Warli Art, a medium I had never encountered before. Stepping into uncharted territory, especially when the outcome would be permanent, can be daunting.

Warli Art may appear as a simple combination of primary shapes, but it is actually a complex and intricate endeavor that demands exceptional focus and an exceptional eye for detail. While painting the actual walls, I encountered difficulties in outlining the sketches created by my classmates. Seeking guidance from my mentor, an expert in the arts field, I optimized the type of paintbrush and strokes I used to paint various aspects of the drawn scene. By applying this technique, I achieved precision in my painting and enhanced the overall aesthetic of the wall.

My exploration of Warli Art not only ignited my interest in the art form but also served as a reminder of the transformative power of stepping out of one’s comfort zone. It demonstrated the potential for developing new experimental skills and fostering personal growth.

Learning Outcome 4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

The trip to Toraniyo Dungar seemed impossible. When we found out we had to climb like 64 flights of stairs to get to the top, I thought about turning back. The hike was very tough and different from what I do at home, so it was hard and uncomfortable. But with carefully planned rest stops and strong determination, we slowly got better. At the top, I realized how powerful commitment is when you focus on something with great perseverance and resilience. On the second-to-last day, we tried to hide our worries about the next activity: working with cow dung. When we got to the place, the strong smell of cow dung was overwhelming. How do the villagers do this every day? I expected to resist a lot, but it turned into acceptance. As I started putting cow dung on the wall, I made sure to cover my whole section without complaining once we began. Even though this will be an unpleasant memory, I am thankful for the chance to help improve the homes of local villagers.

Learning Outcome 6: Engagement with issues of global significance

A deep immersion in rural life allowed us to actively engage with various local issues that hold global significance. For instance, our visit to CIBART (Center for Indian Bamboo Resources and Technology) was enlightening. We learned about the process of crafting bamboos from across the country and the Indian subcontinent. This experience underscored bamboo’s potential as a robust and sustainable alternative to conventional construction materials, as well as its mass-usability.

Additionally, our visit to the Krishi Vigyan Kendra provided valuable insights into the intricate relationship between climate change and crop cultivation. Interacting with local businessmen and artisans also shed light on the daily struggles and economic challenges they endure. This organic perspective on rural life in Kilad made me realize that my role as a global citizen demands vigilance about global trends and empathy for those suffering.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Even seemingly insignificant choices can have a profound impact on others. Our unique cultural environment necessitated respectful interactions with locals, even when their practices seemed unusual or perplexing. Our approach to the trip was a reflection of the ethical choices we make as open-minded individuals.

Visits to CIBART and the regional agricultural college prompted us to evaluate the long-term positive effects of adopting sustainable alternatives and conducting ethical farming practices. Being aware of the consequences of our seemingly inconsequential decisions has taught me the benefits of adopting a conscientious mindset, where every choice, decision, and approach is carefully calculated and intentional.
