Participation and Experience
As part of my CAS experience, I participated in three community clean-up drives organized by my school. Each location highlighted different environmental concerns and reinforced the need for cleaner public spaces.
The first clean-up was along a local riverbank, where I was shocked to see trash floating in a water source that supplies drinking water to thousands of homes in Surat. Many locals seemed indifferent to the long-term effects of pollution.
The second clean-up took place at Dumas Beach, a popular tourist spot often littered with plastic waste. Vendors routinely discarded plastic, worsening the issue. Despite these challenges, I was glad to contribute to making Surat a cleaner and greener city.
LO4 – Show Commitment and Perseverance in CAS Experience
Waking up early on a Sunday was challenging, but I remained committed, knowing my efforts had a purpose. There were times I felt like skipping the drive, but I reminded myself of its importance.
On-site, I ensured efficiency by thoroughly cleaning one area before moving on. Participating with friends made the experience more enjoyable and motivating.
LO6 – Engaging with Issues of Global Significance
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Removing plastic waste is essential for maintaining clean water bodies and urban sustainability.
Community clean-ups address global concerns such as environmental conservation, public health, and social responsibility. By tackling local waste pollution, these efforts contribute to broader environmental goals.
LO7 – Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Participating in clean-ups is not just about removing waste but also about taking ethical responsibility for shared public spaces. These areas are vital ecosystems that must be preserved for future generations.
Taking part in this initiative reinforced the importance of collective action. Protecting natural habitats isn’t just an obligation of environmental organizations—it’s a shared duty that starts with individual efforts.
