Barista course

Strand: Creativity
Location: Kokoro
Date: 14 September

Enrolling in the Barista course at Kokoro was an enriching experience that blended creativity with hands-on skills. While my love for coffee has always been strong, this course introduced me to the intricate art and science behind brewing the perfect cup. It was more than just learning about coffee; it was about understanding the craftsmanship involved in every step, from selecting coffee beans to mastering the espresso machine.

During the course, I explored various brewing methods, including espresso, cappuccino, latte, and cold brew. Additionally, I gained practical experience in customer service and honed my latte art skills, making the learning process both engaging and rewarding.

Learning Outcomes

LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

One of my first realizations during the course was my strong attention to detail. Crafting a perfect espresso shot required precision—grinding beans correctly, tamping them properly, and ensuring an ideal extraction. I found myself naturally drawn to this meticulous process. However, I struggled with multitasking when preparing multiple drinks simultaneously. This experience highlighted the importance of time management and task prioritization, skills I aim to improve further.

LO2: Demonstrate Challenges Undertaken and Develop New Skills

The most challenging yet rewarding aspect of the course was mastering latte art. It required both technical skill and artistic finesse. My initial attempts were far from perfect, but with continuous practice and guidance from the instructor, I gradually improved. This process reinforced the value of perseverance and embracing mistakes as essential parts of learning.

LO5: Demonstrate Skills and Appreciate the Value of Working Together

The learning experience was greatly enhanced by working alongside other participants. We shared techniques, encouraged one another, and even engaged in friendly competitions to create the most visually appealing latte art. This collaborative environment made the process enjoyable and significantly reduced stress.

Beyond the technical aspects, the course deepened my appreciation for customer service and the role of a barista in creating a welcoming atmosphere. I realized that being a barista is not just about making coffee—it’s about building connections with people. This experience has motivated me to approach future challenges with the same enthusiasm and resilience, knowing that stepping out of my comfort zone is the key to growth.
