Shilpi School

Visiting Shilpi School was a unique and eye-opening experience. The school caters to special needs students of all ages, ranging from children to adults, and my role as a volunteer was to engage with them through conversation, games, and interactive activities. The experience was not just about spending time with them but about fostering a space where they felt included, valued, and comfortable expressing themselves.

LOR 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Interacting with special needs students required patience, adaptability, and an open mind. Each individual had a different way of communicating, and I had to quickly adjust my approach based on their comfort levels. Some were eager to interact, while others needed more time to open up. Finding ways to encourage engagement without overwhelming them was a challenge, but it taught me to be more observant and sensitive to non-verbal cues. Through this, I developed better communication skills and learned how to create a supportive environment where everyone could participate at their own pace.

LOR 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The experience at Shilpi School highlighted the importance of inclusivity and social integration for individuals with special needs. Many of them face barriers to interaction and engagement, which can lead to social isolation. By participating in activities with them, I contributed to creating a space where they felt acknowledged and included. Simple interactions—whether through games, casual conversations, or just being present—played a role in breaking these barriers. This experience reinforced the need for greater awareness and efforts towards integrating individuals with special needs into everyday social settings.

LOR 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Ensuring that all students felt included and respected was not just a responsibility but an ethical choice. Many of them were initially hesitant to engage, so I took the initiative to approach them in a way that made them feel comfortable. Instead of waiting for them to participate, I actively encouraged involvement by adjusting activities to suit their needs, using simple communication methods, and providing reassurance when they hesitated. These small but intentional actions helped in creating an environment where everyone felt valued and safe to express themselves. It reinforced the importance of treating all individuals with fairness and empathy, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds.
