Bal Mela is a one-day event focused on engagement and interaction through various activities, particularly with unprivileged students who participated in the event. As a volunteer for the dance segment, my role was to guide students in following simple dance steps and encourage participation. This experience involved working with a large group, adapting to different energy levels, and ensuring smooth coordination throughout the event.

LOR 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Leading a dance activity required awareness of my own skills in movement and rhythm while also recognizing areas where I needed improvement. I had to adjust my approach based on the students’ responses, ensuring they could easily follow along while maintaining the event’s energy. The experience highlighted the importance of clear demonstration and patience when guiding others.
LOR 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Since this was a live event with an open group, adapting to different levels of enthusiasm and participation was a challenge. Some students picked up the steps quickly, while others needed extra cues. This required adjusting movements on the spot and maintaining a balance between engagement and structure. The unpredictability of the crowd made it necessary to stay flexible and adjust the dance flow accordingly.
LOR 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Dance, as a form of expression, promotes inclusivity and cultural exchange. By participating in this activity, I was able to help unprivileged students feel engaged and involved by simplifying dance steps, offering encouragement, and adjusting to their comfort levels. Some were hesitant at first, but through repeated demonstration and creating a fun, pressure-free atmosphere, they gradually gained confidence and participated more actively. The experience demonstrated how movement can be a tool for breaking social barriers and fostering a sense of belonging.
LOR 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Ensuring that the dance session was accessible and inclusive was an ethical responsibility, particularly for the unprivileged students who were initially hesitant to join. It was important to create a space where they felt safe, respected, and encouraged to participate without fear of judgment. Many of them needed extra encouragement, so I actively engaged with them by demonstrating steps multiple times, using simple verbal cues, and making eye contact to assure them they were doing well. If some students hesitated, I would join them directly, dancing alongside them until they felt more comfortable. This ethical choice to actively include and support them helped break their initial reluctance, ensuring they felt seen, valued, and truly part of the experience. The experience reinforced the importance of creating a welcoming and respectful environment, where every participant, regardless of background, felt valued and empowered to engage.
