CAS Blog: Pi Day Experience

Event: Pi Day
CAS Strands: Creativity

DATE:March 18 2025

Pi Day was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate mathematics in a fun and engaging way while enhancing my creativity and teamwork skills. As a member of the decoration team, my primary role was to design and set up thematic decorations that reflected the essence of Pi and mathematics. This involved creating banners, posters, and interactive displays to make the event space visually appealing and immersive.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this experience was seeing the excitement on students’ faces as they interacted with the decorations and engaged with the event. Our goal was to make mathematics more enjoyable and accessible, and witnessing our efforts translate into enthusiasm was incredibly fulfilling.

Connection to CAS Learning Outcomes:

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Designing and executing decorations required artistic creativity and problem-solving skills. I had to experiment with different materials, layouts, and designs to make the decorations visually appealing while aligning them with the mathematical theme. Through this, I developed my creative abilities and learned how to manage time effectively to complete the setup before the event.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
As part of the decoration team, we needed to plan our work in advance to ensure that all materials were ready and the setup was completed on time. This involved brainstorming ideas, delegating tasks, and organizing a schedule to ensure efficiency. Through this experience, I honed my ability to plan and execute tasks systematically.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Decorating for Pi Day was a team effort, requiring constant coordination and cooperation with my peers. We worked together to implement ideas, solve design challenges, and distribute tasks effectively. By collaborating, we were able to create a visually cohesive and engaging atmosphere that enhanced the overall event experience.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Mathematics is a universal language that connects people across the world. By participating in Pi Day, I contributed to promoting the appreciation of mathematics beyond the classroom, helping make the subject more engaging and accessible. This experience reinforced the importance of fostering a love for learning in creative ways.

Reflection:

Pi Day was not merely an activity; it was a chance to marry creativity with learning and foster an increased appreciation of mathematics. Inthe process, I enhanced my teamwork skills, time management, and creative thinking under pressure. Witnessing the final decorations transform and help create the vibrant ambiance was immenselyfulfilling. Inspirited by this experience, I look forward to being involvedin more projects that mix creativity and knowledge to facilitate valuableexperiences for others.
