CAS Blog: CSP/Group 4 Project Experience
Event: CSP/Group 4 Project
CAS Strands: Creativity, Service
The CSP (Collaborative Science Project) or Group 4 Project was an engaging and collaborative experience that required me to take on various responsibilities, including making posters, planning speeches, and contributing to the decor. This event combined creativity with teamwork, as we aimed to present scientific ideas in an accessible and visually appealing manner.
One of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of this experience was designing informative and eye-catching posters. I had to ensure they effectively conveyed complex scientific concepts while maintaining visual appeal. Similarly, preparing a structured speech plan required me to think critically about how to communicate key ideas clearly and engagingly.
Connection to CAS Learning Outcomes:
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Creating posters and planning speeches required me to develop both my design and public speaking skills. I had to think creatively to make the information visually appealing while ensuring clarity and effectiveness. A major challenge was learning how to use Canva, a design tool I had never worked with before. At first, it was overwhelming with so many features and customization options, but as I explored and experimented, I became more comfortable using different templates, fonts, and layouts. This experience not only helped me improve my design skills but also taught me how to present information in a way that captures attention while keeping it simple and engaging. Additionally, preparing and delivering speeches pushed me to refine my ability to simplify complex ideas for a broader audience, boosting my confidence in public speaking.
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Planning this project required careful organization, from conceptualizing the posters to structuring the speech. I had to think ahead, set deadlines, and ensure that each step aligned with our overall goal. Coordinating with my peers was a crucial part of the process—we divided tasks efficiently, keeping in mind each person’s strengths and availability. Since I was responsible for designing the posters, I had to make sure they complemented the speech while being clear and informative on their own. This experience helped me become more structured in my approach to planning and improved my ability to work efficiently under time constraints. It also made me realize the importance of balancing creativity with practicality when working on a project like this.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Collaboration was key to making this project successful. From brainstorming ideas to finalizing the presentation, working with my peers required constant communication and teamwork. We had to make sure everyone was on the same page, share feedback, and adjust our plans based on each other’s inputs. While working on the posters, I often asked for suggestions from my teammates, which helped me see things from different perspectives and improve my designs. Similarly, while preparing for the speech, we practiced together, giving each other constructive feedback to enhance our delivery. Through this experience, I realized how valuable teamwork is—not only in ensuring a smooth workflow but also in pushing each other to improve and produce the best possible outcome.
Reflection:
I learned a lot through the process of the CSP/Group 4 Project, as I got to get creative in an academic sense, while getting to communicate?and work with a group. Through this process, I have gained confidence in my ability to?present information effectively and work with my peers. Because of this experience, it has made me?pursue these types of opportunities, in which my skills can help impact my academic community as well as in a more general community setting.
