Participating in the Bal Mela was an enriching and inspiring experience that allowed me to blend service, creativity, and collaboration with a focus on child-centered activities. The event, organized to bring joy and learning opportunities to children from underprivileged backgrounds, was an excellent opportunity to engage in meaningful service while exploring my own abilities and perspectives. It was great to teach them with my talent.
LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
Leading the art workshop highlighted my ability to engage with children effectively. However, I realized I needed to improve my patience and adaptability when managing large groups. Through the experience I found out that managing a big cohort of children was difficult.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:
Balancing the needs of different children, managing time, and ensuring inclusivity in activities were challenging but helped me develop better organizational and interpersonal skills. I made sure to keep resources ready before the next group of students came so that I could save time and teach the students more easily.
LO 5. Engage with issues of global significance:
The event addressed the issue of unequal access to recreational and educational opportunities for underprivileged children, highlighting the importance of inclusive development. These students do not recieve enough and right education. Interacting with them, made me feel grateful for everything I had and made me understand the issue of unequal rights, gender inequality and right to educations.
LO6. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
Ensuring that all activities were respectful, culturally sensitive, and inclusive required constant reflection on the ethical implications of our actions.
LO 7 Develop international-mindedness through global engagement
Interacting with children from different socio-economic backgrounds reminded me of the importance of empathy, respect, and understanding in creating a more equitable world. I made sure to interact with them, talk to them and even know more about them. I respected the difference of background and even communicated with them in a language that they can understand.
The Bal Mela was more than just an event—it was a journey of service. It reminded me that small actions can have a profound impact on others’ lives. Witnessing the smiles on the children’s faces and their excitement to learn reaffirmed my commitment to contributing positively to society. This experience has inspired me to participate in more service-oriented projects and continue developing skills that will enable me to create meaningful change.
