Volunteering at Bal Mela(Service)

I served as a volunteer for Bal Mela – an event hosted by Fountainhead School for underprivileged children from governmental schools across the city. My roles as a volunteer for the Arts and Craft segment involved devising creative coloring activities for the kids and allowing them to express themselves authentically.

Learning Outcome 3: Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience

To ensure a meaningful experience for the children, I planned engaging art activities that would be simple yet enjoyable. We arranged coloring sheets, drawing materials, and creative prompts to inspire their imagination. On the day of the event, I took an active role in guiding the children, helping them explore different colors, patterns, and ideas. I encouraged them to share their thoughts behind their drawings, fostering self-expression and creativity. I also ensured that every child had the materials they needed and felt included in the activity.

Learning Outcome 6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

Volunteering at Bal Mela as part of the Arts and Crafts segment allowed me to engage with a crucial global issue—educational inequality and the lack of creative opportunities for underprivileged children. Across the world, many children from low-income backgrounds do not have access to quality education, creative expression, or extracurricular activities, which are essential for their holistic development. Through this event, I directly contributed to bridging this gap by providing children from government schools with a platform to explore their creativity, imagination, and self-expression—something they may not always have access to in their regular schooling.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

During my participation in Bal Mela, I became more aware of the ethical responsibility involved in working with underprivileged children. My role in the Arts and Crafts segment was not just about engaging them in creative activities but also about ensuring that my approach was respectful, inclusive, and empowering. One key ethical consideration was treating every child with dignity and equality, ensuring that no one felt left out or undervalued. Many of these children come from challenging socio-economic backgrounds, and it was important for me to create a safe and supportive space where they felt encouraged rather than judged. I made a conscious effort to appreciate their creativity, regardless of their skill level, and avoid any form of comparison that could discourage them.
