Participating in my school’s night tournament was an exciting and enriching experience. My friends and I played various sports, with cricket being the main focus. Although my team won one match and lost two, the event was not just about competition—it was about teamwork, learning, and enjoying the spirit of sports. After cricket, we continued playing basketball and football, splitting into different teams. This experience aligned with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, as it encouraged physical activity and mental well-being.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Once the cricket matches concluded, my friends and I decided to explore other sports. We split into teams and played basketball and football. For me, basketball was a new experience. I’ve always been curious about the sport but never had the chance to play it seriously. During the game, I found myself asking questions about the rules, such as how fouls are called and what constitutes a traveling violation. This curiosity aligns with the IB learner profile trait of being an inquirer. By seeking to understand the rules and strategies, I not only improved my skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for the sport.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
One of the biggest challenges I faced was adapting to basketball, a sport I had little experience with. I took on the challenge by actively asking questions about the rules and techniques, allowing me to understand the game better. Over the course of the night, I developed new skills, such as dribbling and positioning, which helped me gain confidence on the court.
LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Despite losing two out of three cricket matches, my team and I remained motivated and continued to give our best effort. Even after cricket ended, we were eager to play more sports, demonstrating our commitment to staying active and engaged. The experience reinforced the importance of resilience and enjoying the game regardless of the outcome.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
Throughout the tournament, I was reminded of the importance of being principled. Whether it was cricket, basketball, or football, honesty and integrity were essential. There were moments when decisions were unclear, but we always prioritized fair play over winning. This commitment to sportsmanship created a positive and respectful environment, reinforcing the idea that how you play matters just as much as the result.
LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance
The night tournament was a perfect example of how sports contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. Engaging in physical activity not only improves our physical health but also boosts mental well-being. The tournament brought everyone together, fostering a sense of community and belonging. It was a reminder that staying active and participating in sports is a fun and effective way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Sports require honesty, and throughout the tournament, I made sure to be Principled by maintaining fair play and sportsmanship. Whether it was calling out an out in cricket, admitting to a foul in basketball, or respecting the referee’s decisions, I ensured that integrity remained a priority. This helped create a positive atmosphere where all players could compete fairly and enjoy the experience.
Conclusion: The night tournament was more than just playing sports—it was about learning, teamwork, and perseverance. By promoting SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, developing new skills as an Inquirer, and upholding integrity as a Principled player, I gained valuable lessons that extend beyond the field.
