Global Odyssey 5.0- Project

Global Odyssey is an annual DP event where Bussiness Management and Economics students set up stalls varying from food, fun and fashion. This year, I was presented with the opportunity to become one of the even coordinators. This proved to be a challenging and new expericence for me as I had to own certain leardership roles that I hadn’t faced before. I took over the event along with a partner and it really helped me sharpen my collaboration, communication and responsibility skills. As I overlooked different sectors of the planning committees I got to know what it is like to plan a school event; from helping the teachers decide the theme, to overlooking the execution of the event on the d-day, it was a rollercoaster.

It was a transformative experience that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and allowed me to grow in multiple aspects. Taking on the role of an event coordinator presented me with numerous challenges that ultimately helped me develop important skills such as leadership, adaptability, and problem-solving.

LO1: Through the process of planning and executing the event, I identified my strengths, such as organization and creativity. I realized that I had a knack for managing multiple tasks efficiently and coming up with innovative solutions under pressure. However, I also recognized areas where I needed to improve, such as delegation and conflict resolution. Initially, I found it difficult to entrust responsibilities to others, wanting to oversee every aspect myself. Over time, I learned that effective delegation not only lightened my workload but also empowered my team members to take ownership of their tasks.

LO3: From the early stages of brainstorming with teachers to finalizing logistics, every step required careful thought and execution. Coordinating with different committees, ensuring each stall had the necessary resources, and troubleshooting unforeseen issues were all part of the journey. We also had to handle budgeting, promotion, and scheduling to ensure the event ran smoothly. Balancing these responsibilities alongside my academic workload was challenging, but it taught me the importance of time management and prioritization.

LO5: Working closely with my partner and the various teams taught me the significance of effective communication and teamwork. It was essential to ensure that every committee was aligned with the event’s goals and timeline. We had to address differing opinions and find common ground, reinforcing the value of compromise and cooperation. Witnessing how a collective effort could bring an idea to life was incredibly rewarding and emphasized the importance of teamwork in achieving a shared vision.

Seeing students enthusiastically participating in the stalls, the seamless coordination among volunteers, and the overall lively atmosphere made all the challenges worthwhile. It was a moment of immense pride and satisfaction, knowing that our efforts had created an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone involved. Reflecting on this journey, I can confidently say that Global Odyssey was a stepping stone in my personal and professional development. It not only enhanced my leadership and organizational skills but also instilled in me a deeper appreciation for teamwork and collaboration. The experience reinforced my ability to adapt to new challenges and helped me grow into a more confident and capable individual.
