“A bend in the road is not the end of the road. Unless you fail to make the turn.” – Helen Keller.
My visit to Shilpa school has been a rollercoaster of events and emotions. Many children weren’t even able to colour or paint. The children of this school were very welcoming and loved to play with us. Both the teachers and the students were very supportive and engaged, and I thank them for the smooth running of our visit. The LO’s are as follows:
LO3- Initiate and plan a CAS experience

When we reached the school, we students were sorted into groups for different activities. My group was responsible for making the children play indoor activities such as musical chairs, passing the box, painting and blowing balloons. For these activities, I initiated and planned the activities with a few of my friends. I researched on the net several games in which children with special needs can easily play and participate. When the games started, I encouraged the children to participate and learn.
LO6- Engagement with issues of global significance
Helping children with disabilities made me realize how important it is to create a more inclusive and accepting world. Around the globe, so many kids with disabilities struggle with access to education and opportunities that others take for granted. By spending time with them, I saw firsthand how simple acts of kindness, patience, and support can make a big difference in their lives. It reminded me that even small efforts—whether through volunteering, raising awareness, or just being more understanding—can contribute to a bigger change in society. This experience also made me reflect on how often people overlook the challenges faced by disabled individuals. Many public spaces, schools, and activities are not designed with their needs in mind, which can make them feel isolated. Seeing their joy and enthusiasm despite these challenges was inspiring, and it reinforced my belief that everyone deserves to be included and valued. It’s not just about helping—it’s about changing our mindset to ensure that no one is left behind. Additionally, working with these children gave me a deeper appreciation for resilience and the power of community. I saw how much of a difference encouragement and support can make, not just in their confidence but in their overall happiness. It made me question the way society treats those with disabilities and how much more we can do to create an environment where they feel empowered rather than limited. This experience has motivated me to be more mindful of inclusion in everyday life and to advocate for a world where diversity is embraced, and everyone has an equal chance to thrive.
Thus, I want to promote understanding and kindness towards these children. To help create a safe world for them too.
LO7- Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Working with children with disabilities made me more aware of the ethical responsibility we have when making choices that affect others. It made me think about how society often ignores the needs of disabled individuals, whether through lack of accessibility or limited opportunities, and how our actions—both big and small—can either reinforce these barriers or help break them down. Throughout this experience, I had to be mindful of how I interacted with the children, ensuring that I was treating them with respect and not pity. It was important to recognize their abilities rather than just their disabilities and to support them in ways that empowered rather than limited them. This made me reflect on the ethical implications of how we approach inclusion and the importance of treating everyone with dignity.I also realized that ethical responsibility extends beyond just personal interactions—it applies to larger systems as well. Schools, workplaces, and public spaces should be designed to accommodate everyone, yet many are not. This experience reinforced the need for advocating for better policies and more inclusive environments, as well as the importance of challenging societal attitudes that often exclude disabled individuals. Recognizing these ethical considerations has encouraged me to be more conscious of the impact of my actions and to actively contribute to a more equitable and accessible world.
Conclusion:
Overall, working with children with disabilities was a deeply meaningful experience that opened my eyes to the challenges they face and the importance of inclusion. It taught me that small actions, like offering support and showing kindness, can make a big difference in their lives. I also became more aware of the ethical responsibility we all have to ensure that no one is excluded or overlooked. This experience has inspired me to be more mindful of accessibility and equality in everyday life and to advocate for a world where everyone, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to thrive.
