CAS Blog Reflection: Mental Health Awareness Project

As part of my CAS project, I contributed by writing a series of blog posts focused on mental disorders and diseases for an existing mental health awareness website. Although the website itself was not created by me, my role was to research, write, and present informative and accessible content that could educate readers and reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues.

The main aim of this project was to raise awareness about mental disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Before starting this project, my understanding of mental health was limited and often influenced by stereotypes. Through detailed research using credible sources, I developed a deeper understanding of the scientific, emotional, and social aspects of mental health conditions. This directly contributed to Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth, as I recognized growth in my research abilities, empathy, and written communication skills.

This project strongly aligned with the Creativity strand of CAS. Writing blogs required me to creatively communicate complex psychological and medical information in a clear and engaging way for a general audience. I had to adapt my writing style and structure to ensure clarity while remaining respectful and sensitive. This process helped me fulfill Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process, as simplifying complex information without losing accuracy was a significant challenge that improved my writing and critical thinking skills.

The Service component of CAS was addressed through my contribution to a mental health awareness platform aimed at public education. Mental health remains a stigmatized topic in many societies, and by providing factual and accessible information, my blogs supported awareness and understanding. This relates to Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience, as I planned the topics, conducted independent research, and structured my blogs with a clear purpose and audience in mind.

Throughout the project, I was required to meet deadlines and ensure my content aligned with the goals of the website. This helped me achieve Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences, as consistent effort was necessary to complete multiple blog posts while balancing academic responsibilities.

By addressing mental health, a global and socially significant issue, this project allowed me to explore ethical considerations such as respectful representation, accuracy of information, and avoiding harmful stereotypes. This directly links to Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance, as mental health affects individuals worldwide and requires collective awareness and understanding.

Overall, this CAS project was a meaningful experience that helped me grow personally and academically. It reinforced the idea that creative skills like writing can be used as a form of service to positively impact others, while also fostering empathy, responsibility, and awareness of global issues.
