Freshers Dance

Participating in the group dance performance for the school’s Freshers’ event was a truly rewarding Creativity CAS experience. Our aim was to welcome the new Grade 11 students with an energetic performance that would set a friendly and inclusive tone for their journey ahead. Through collaborative rehearsals, choreography planning, and the final stage performance, I not only contributed to building school spirit but also developed new skills and self-awareness.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

This experience allowed me to recognize both my existing abilities and the areas I needed to improve. My strengths lay in rhythm, coordination, and the ability to pick up dance steps quickly. I was also confident in working with a team, which helped during group formations and transitions. However, I realized that my stamina during long practice sessions needed improvement, as well as my ability to adapt when choreography changed at the last minute. By reflecting on these aspects, I learned to push myself physically and mentally, practicing extra at home to maintain energy and flexibility.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

The biggest challenge was performing on stage in front of a large audience. Although I have danced before, this event had a much larger crowd, and the pressure to set the right tone for the Freshers’ event added to the nerves. I had to work on overcoming stage fright and building confidence in my performance. Additionally, learning complex choreography in a limited timeframe tested my ability to focus and memorize steps quickly. These challenges helped me develop better time management, improve my stage presence, and gain confidence in expressing myself through movement.

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

While this was a group activity, we actively took ownership of the planning process. From brainstorming the theme and selecting the music to dividing the choreography into manageable sections, everyone contributed ideas and took responsibility. I helped in creating a practice schedule that accommodated everyone’s availability, ensuring that each rehearsal was productive. This planning phase taught me the importance of clear communication and the ability to adapt when unexpected changes—such as music edits or absence of team members—occurred.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

Consistency was key to making this performance a success. We rehearsed several times a week, often after regular school hours, which required balancing academics and extracurricular responsibilities. There were days when fatigue or other commitments made it tempting to skip practice, but I stayed committed because I understood that every team member’s effort mattered. Over time, our dedication paid off as our moves became sharper and our synchronization improved. This perseverance highlighted the value of discipline and the satisfaction of working steadily toward a common goal.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

The performance would not have been possible without teamwork. Each dancer brought unique skills, and we relied on one another to maintain synchronization and energy. We learned to give and accept constructive feedback, adjust to different learning paces, and solve problems—such as last-minute changes in formations—together. I discovered how mutual respect and patience strengthen group dynamics and lead to a polished final product. This experience reinforced my belief that collaboration can turn individual talent into something far greater.

Learner Profile: Risk-taker

Performing on stage in front of such a large audience required courage and a willingness to step beyond my comfort zone. Embracing that risk helped me grow in confidence, adaptability, and self-expression.

Overall Reflection:
The Freshers’ group dance performance was more than just a creative endeavor. It was an opportunity to celebrate community, showcase school spirit, and create a welcoming atmosphere for the new students. Personally, it strengthened my dance skills, improved my planning and teamwork abilities, and allowed me to develop confidence in public performance. This experience showed me how art and collaboration can unite people and create lasting memories, leaving me proud of both the process and the impact we made.
