Heart of Hope

As part of the Food Drive by Hearts of Hope, the donation of one of the very popular and affordable snacks Vada Pav, was also included to serve the needy with the quick bite. Preparation and distribution of these freshly made Vada Pav was done by volunteers to underserved populations such as migrant workers, homeless people and low-income families. This project was to provide nutritious and comfort food to people with food insecurity, as well as teach people about the need to feed vulnerable groups with healthful and easy to prepare food. The motivation not only assisted in solving the immediate hunger problem but also provided better connection with the community by acts of charity and unity.

LOI 3: Initial and Plan a CAS experience

This CAS experience will aim to plan, start and implement a Hearts of Hope-led food drive. The mission will focus on helping those individuals and families in need of food through collecting and donating food to shelter houses, food banks, and underserved communities. The first one is to create awareness of food insecurity and bring solidarity to the community by taking action collectively.

LOI 4: Show perceverence and commitment in the CAS experience

I also show perseverance and dedication to persist in the hardship despite the difficulties, continuity in work, and long-term effect. When donations were sluggish or logistical problems caused, I remained goal oriented through creative problem solving, outreach to additional donors and planning changes as necessary. Discipline is important and thus I maintained discipline to the schedule of the collection, arrangement of food and coordinating the distribution even in the presence of other engagements. To make sure that the food drive will have a long-lasting effect, I have contacted community partners and thought about making the event an annual one. Moreover, I encouraged and empower the volunteers by a lead by example approach, as the project leader because I demonstrated to them how to remain committed to the cause. In this experience, I sought to create a feeling that I am part of a community that is united and I, myself, enhanced my capacity to persevere and be committed to something meaningful.

LOI 5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Through the Food Drive held by Hearts of Hope, I was able to show that I can work well in collaboration with the volunteers, local businesses, and community organizations. Through food collection, sorting and distribution, I used the strengths of the team members to make sure that the project was smooth. Collaboration enabled us to have access to more resources, distribute roles, and accomplish tasks more effectively. The joint venture not only made the drive more successful but also created the feeling of unity and sense of mission, emphasized the strength of the collective activity in combatting food insecurity and assisting the community.

LOI 6: Engagement with issue of global significance

The Food Drive hosted by Hearts of Hope got involved directly in the problem of food insecurity which is a widespread problem in the world community that affects millions of people, particularly the underprivileged communities. The drive provided solutions to the immediate hunger of vulnerable populations by gathering and sharing food with the local shelters and those in need. On a larger scale, it also made people aware about the need of food security and the necessity to take collective action in order to address this urgent global problem. The motivation brought together communities and emphasized on how the individual actions of a small group can help in the world global solutions, which fosters unity and a sense of community about helping the needy. With this project we were able to not only deliver essential resources to those in need but also to create discussion about the broader effects of food scarcity and the need of sustainable and equitable food systems in the world.

I was personally greatly affected by the Food Drive that Hearts of Hope organized. It reinforced my social responsibility feeling and imparted useful leadership, organization and teamwork skills. The experience further strengthened my understanding of people with food insecurity and pushed me to be more active in societal cause. In general, it made me a better person who is more compassionate and proactive, which supports my idea to have a positive impact on society and the world.
