Reflection:
My six-day rural immersion experience in Mokhamal, Dang, was nothing short of transformative. It offered a rare opportunity to step away from the fast pace of urban life and deeply engage with tribal communities and their unique ways of living. Through active participation in daily chores, school visits, traditional art, and trekking, I not only broadened my global and cultural awareness but also challenged myself emotionally, mentally, and physically.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
This experience revealed my ability to adapt quickly to unfamiliar settings and connect meaningfully with people from vastly different backgrounds. Whether it was bonding with school children or assisting with kitchen chores, I stepped out of my comfort zone with openness and empathy. However, I also became aware of areas for growth particularly in patience. Long treks through rough terrain while listening to cultural narratives tested my endurance, reminding me to stay mentally present and appreciative even during physically demanding tasks.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Living without the conveniences of urban infrastructure was initially overwhelming. Simple tasks like fetching water or cooking without modern appliances—became learning opportunities. I acquired skills such as cooking traditional meals, learning welding, participating in basket weaving, and experimenting with Warli art. Each activity pushed me to approach unfamiliar situations with curiosity and resilience, helping me grow in adaptability, creativity, and perseverance.
LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Although the trip was organized by the school, I took initiative within the structure to make my engagement meaningful. I actively involved myself in every activity teaching, assisting in cooking, initiating conversations with community members, and participating in art sessions. I ensured that I wasn’t just a passive observer, but a responsible and reflective contributor to the experience.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experiences
Adjusting to the rural lifestyle involved significant discomfort absence of digital connectivity, basic amenities, and rigid daily routines. Despite this, I remained enthusiastic and fully committed to each activity. I embraced the simplicity of our surroundings, found joy in the smallest moments like singing around a bonfire or watching the sunrise on a temple trek and allowed myself to grow from each discomfort.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Teamwork was essential throughout the experience, from preparing meals together to constructing trellises and coordinating student activities. One particularly collaborative moment involved navigating a local tribal market to buy ingredients as a group. It required careful budgeting, negotiation, and shared decision-making all of which honed my communication and problem-solving skills. These collaborative experiences reinforced the power of collective effort in unfamiliar and often challenging contexts.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The immersion trip gave me firsthand exposure to issues such as rural poverty, educational disparity, and sustainable living issues faced by millions globally. Witnessing the resourcefulness of the local community how they live harmoniously with nature, use local materials, and minimize waste broadened my understanding of sustainability. It deepened my appreciation for their resilience and inspired me to reflect on my role in addressing economic and environmental inequality.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Being a guest in someone else’s space came with ethical responsibilities. I was conscious of respecting cultural norms, seeking consent before taking photos, and participating in a way that honored rather than intruded upon their way of life. Whether interacting with children, helping in homes, or learning traditions, I approached each situation with integrity and cultural sensitivity. This experience highlighted how even well-intentioned actions must be considered carefully to ensure they do not exploit or disrespect local communities.
