Community Service – Service

Teaching Mathematics to Underprivileged Students

I was favored with a teaching mathematics to students in from government school, most of whom are from a underprivileged background. This particular opportunity helped me to pass on some general knowledge while at the same time helping them to grow as individuals. In return, it became the constructive experience that benefits oneself and develops necessary skills, such as critical thinking.

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

As soon as I started undertaking this particular community service, I knew that my area of brilliance was mathematics. One of my major strengths is in my ability to break down concepts and make it easy for learners to grasp mathematical concepts. Nevertheless, I also came up with the areas that required strength, or in other words, the areas of weakness. The two biggest focuses were confidence and communication. At first I felt uneasy about speaking to a lot of students at once. I worried whether I would be able to fulfill responsibilities of the position efficiently. Nevertheless, I became more and more confident and was able to teach the students independently.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

I encountered my biggest challenge when teaching a large student population because it was completely new to me. My ability to instruct my concepts to few friends proved different from teaching new students in an unfamiliar educational setting. The beginning phase proved difficult for me because I struggled to communicate effectively with my students. Through the days I learned ways to handle the students better while my communication and critical thinking abilities improved. The lessons became more engaging when my friends and I added interactive activities including block-based addition exercises and multiplication games with tic-tac-toe format. My creative method of instruction produced fun educational experiences that both students and I utilized to design new teaching methodologies.

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Teaching three weekends while planning six sessions demanded both dedication along with consistent effort from me. The beginning of my project started with high motivation but I lost some of my creative abilities throughout the series. The beginning of my teaching plan included creative activities yet my subsequent ideas lost their initial organization.

The experience demonstrated to me the essential value of never giving up. Through difficult moments I continued pushing myself to maintain student interest in the educational activities. The experience aided my development of discipline and enhanced my dedication to long-term work yet I continue to focus on maintaining productivity steadiness.

LO 5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Teaching required multiple friends aligned to perform this task as one collective unit. The ineffective coordination between us in the beginning period made it challenging to effectively organize our lessons. We built a functional system through our approach discussion followed by planning. The team experience enabled me to build social abilities through working together with others and developing collective leadership and accountability. Joint efforts between group members boosted our productivity levels which enabled our compressed teaching schedule to match the timeline of what would have taken months.

LO 6 : Engagement with issues of global significance

Each person has the right to obtain education which should be accessible to everyone irrespective of their family economic level. Socioeconomic limitations and social barriers prevent numerous children from disadvantaged areas from accessing good education. Through this initiative I actively worked towards bringing people closer to the achievement of equal education opportunities. The chance to teach math through engaging methods to these students enabled me to contribute positively to solving education’s inequality problems.

Conclusion

Participating in this community service became a fulfilling experience which added valuable lessons to my life. Taking part in this educational program enabled me to develop advanced communication abilities and social acumen while directly improving the students I worked with. The students learned different mathematical principles during three weeks of an enjoyable interactive instruction period. During my time as an IB learner I displayed the traits of Communicator and Open-Mindedness because I learned to adapt to new situations while interacting with students who have different cultural backgrounds. The project reached successful completion because it enhanced my development as well as the students’ academic progress.
