CAS Project: Play2BeatCancer

Over the past four months, I embarked on an experience that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and helped me evolve personally while contributing to a cause that matters deeply to me. Along with the support of my friends and parents, I collaborated as the Operations Head to plan and organize a pickleball tournament aimed at creating a positive social impact. This initiative served as the foundation for my vision of building an organization that combines my passion for sports with a sense of social responsibility. The idea is to host sports tournaments and donate the proceeds to cancer hospitals, supporting patients and their families.

This event was no easy task, especially for someone like me who identifies as an introvert. My tendency to avoid networking was a challenge, but the project demanded that I step out of my comfort zone. I needed to communicate with participants, negotiate with sponsors, and coordinate with my team to ensure success. This experience significantly enhanced my communication abilities and highlighted the importance of relationship-building in achieving common objectives. The tournament attracted 60 participants and secured two sponsorships, both of which were milestones for me. This achievement was possible because I stayed open to ideas, adapted to challenges, and reflected on my progress to make improvements along the way.

LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

Through this experience, I discovered my strength in planning and execution, as I successfully managed the organization of a large-scale event. My ability to strategize, delegate tasks, and stay focused ensured the smooth running of the tournament. At the same time, I recognized communication as an area for growth. Initially, reaching out to sponsors and participants was intimidating, but gradually engaging with them boosted my confidence in networking. This has motivated me to continue improving my interpersonal skills for future opportunities.

LO2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills

Managing a tournament of this magnitude was a major challenge, particularly because it required me to take on new responsibilities such as event coordination, marketing, and sponsorship acquisition. I learned how to design promotional material, handle registrations, and maintain sponsor relations—skills I had never used before. Additionally, overcoming my introverted nature to interact with strangers was a personal milestone that strengthened my adaptability and resilience. These new skills not only made the event successful but also equipped me for future projects.

LO3: Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience

This project originated entirely from my idea, driven by my passion for sports and desire to create a meaningful impact. I took the initiative to conceptualize the tournament, set clear objectives, and develop a detailed action plan. This involved researching event logistics, creating timelines, assigning roles to team members, and ensuring coordination across all aspects. Planning this experience taught me foresight, organization, and leadership—skills that were rewarding to apply when I saw my plan come to life.

LO4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience

The tournament required four months of consistent effort, testing my perseverance and commitment. There were challenges along the way—delays in securing sponsorships, difficulties in attracting participants—but I stayed determined. I refined my strategies, improved promotions, and kept adjusting until we reached our goals. Balancing academics with this project was demanding, but my dedication to making a difference kept me motivated. Watching the event succeed after months of hard work was deeply fulfilling and reinforced the value of persistence.

LO5: Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Although I initiated the concept, its success was possible because of teamwork. I worked closely with friends and family, dividing tasks like logistics, marketing, and sponsor coordination. This collaboration taught me how crucial communication and shared responsibility are for success. While I focused on operations and planning, others helped with outreach and registration. This collective effort not only eased the workload but also enriched the project by bringing in different perspectives. The outcome proved how powerful teamwork can be in achieving meaningful goals.

LO6: Engagement With Issues of Global Significance

Cancer is a global health challenge affecting millions worldwide. By donating the proceeds from this tournament to Mahavir Cancer Hospital, I contributed to supporting cancer care and awareness. While this may seem like a small effort, it aligns with broader global health initiatives and Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Promoting sports also emphasizes the importance of physical activity in disease prevention. This experience showed me how a local project can have a global connection.

LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Ethical considerations guided every decision in the tournament. From ensuring fairness in matches to maintaining transparency in financial matters, integrity was a priority. I made sure registration was open and unbiased, and all players had an equal opportunity. When handling sponsorships and funds, I maintained accountability and ensured all proceeds were allocated as promised. Additionally, I enforced fair play and rule compliance throughout the event. This experience highlighted how ethical decision-making is essential in all aspects of life.

Conclusion

This tournament was a transformative experience that strengthened my leadership, communication, and collaboration skills. It emphasized the importance of persistence, ethical choices, and using passion for a meaningful cause. Overcoming challenges and working as a team not only ensured the success of the event but also inspired me to continue organizing sports initiatives that create a positive impact.
