Regarding the PI Day in my school this year, I took part in the group of decor team members. Our role was to conceptualize, design and install decorations that would turn the place of the event into an active and entertaining sight related to the theme of a study in mathematics, in particular, the series of the number 3.14 (pi) (Pi). We had to work a few weeks prior to the event, and we would spend many afternoon sessions planning, creating and setting up.
Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
In several ways this experience took me out of my comfort zone. First, I was having difficulties with creativity when it comes to combining accurate mathematically designed ideas and a thing of beauty. Being a person not deeply involved in artistic activities, it was difficult to create a theme based on such an abstract concept as Pi. Nevertheless, this challenge made me an opportunity to learn new skills in the sphere of design, space organization, and even primitive work with the craft. I got to know how to make big scale paper model of Pi symbol, pattern design, and the use of color coordination to make the place attractive. Also, time management was a necessity because we had to balance between school work and the preparations of decorations.
Learning Outcome 4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Throughout the preparation period, there were multiple moments where things did not go as planned. Certain materials we ordered arrived late, some designs didn’t work as well as we had imagined, and on a few occasions, we had to redo entire sections of the decor. Despite these setbacks, I remained committed to the project. I attended every planning meeting and work session, often staying after school to ensure that we met our deadlines. This perseverance paid off when we saw the final setup on PI Day. It was incredibly satisfying to see how our dedication resulted in a vibrant and exciting environment that everyone appreciated.
Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
One of the most rewarding aspects of this experience was working as part of a team. Our decor team had members with diverse strengths — some were great at design, others at execution, and some at managing resources and schedules. We divided tasks based on our individual strengths but also supported each other whenever someone faced difficulties. Effective communication, sharing of ideas, and mutual respect were key to our collaboration. I realized how essential teamwork is in achieving a common goal, especially when dealing with a creative project like this. The collective brainstorming sessions often led to better ideas than what any one of us could have come up with individually.
Conclusion:
Being part of the PI Day decor team was a fulfilling and educational experience. Not only did I develop new artistic and organizational skills, but I also learned valuable lessons about teamwork and perseverance. Seeing the smiles and excitement of students and teachers as they walked into the beautifully decorated venue made all our hard work worthwhile. This CAS experience taught me that stepping outside my comfort zone and facing challenges with a positive attitude can lead to personal growth and memorable achievement.
