As part of my IB CAS experience, I embarked on a year-long adventure into the world of cricket. I was initially drawn to the sport because of its fast-paced gameplay and strategic complexity, but I soon discovered that this experience would not only enhance my physical fitness but also make a significant contribution to my personal growth and character development. Throughout the year, I worked on three primary learning outcomes: identifying my strengths and areas where I need to develop, showing persistence and commitment, and overcoming obstacles while building fundamental cricket skills like batting styles, bowling precision, and fielding quickness.

LO 1:  Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

When I first started playing cricket, I was keen but not very aware of the physical and technical requirements of the game. My early self-evaluation pointed to a hand-eye coordination strength, which benefited my batting. I was not consistent in my shots and did not have good footwork while playing defensive as well as attacking shots. Identifying these shortcomings was the initial step towards my improvement. To track my improvement, I kept a diary, noting areas where I played well and areas which required improvement.

With the assistance of my coach and teammates, I was able to recognize areas where I needed improvement most, such as shot selection and endurance. Although I was capable of producing strong strokes, I tended to be off position, impacting my capability to react to various deliveries in the right manner. The realization of this encouraged me to perfect my footwork and develop endurance. I established clear goals, including developing my agility through ladder drills and fitness through running and interval training. By acknowledging my strengths and working actively upon my weaknesses, I consistently improved in both technique and physical conditioning.

LO 2 -Overcoming Challenges and Developing new skills

As the cricket season went on, I had to deal with numerous challenges that tried my endurance. The largest challenge was how I performed in ISSO. After my first few matches, I had suffered hard losses that were hard to swallow. But instead of letting these losses demoralize me, I used them as a chance to improve. Discussing my performances with my coach enabled me to determine various techniques and strategies that required betterment, including smoothing my batting stance, advancing my bowling accuracy, and enhancing my fielding reflexes.

With every game, I acquired new skills, especially in strategic decision-making and mental toughness. I learned to evaluate my opponents’ game, predict their strategies, and align my own strategy against them accordingly. These experiences underlined the significance of not just technical skills like shot selection, bowling styles, and quick reactions on the field but also mental toughness to play under pressure. I also went out of my way to practice with teammates with different skill sets, each possessing their own strengths to bring to the game. This enabled me to adjust to different styles of play and increase my overall cricket knowledge.

Looking back at this, I can appreciate how much I have improved—not only as a player, but personally. I have been able to recognize both my abilities and weaknesses, remain committed to my objectives with determination, and accept challenges as stepping stones towards self-growth. The experiences I have learned through cricket will certainly influence my future, reminding me that improvement usually results from venturing out of my comfort zone and constantly improving. Looking forward, I am excited to take these experiences with me, both on and off the field.

LO 4 – Showing perseverance and commitment

During the year, my dedication to cricket was put to the test several times. Squeezing rigorous training into busy timetables, juggling school work and other activities regularly proved challenging. Physical and mental fatigue had times when it was almost too much to resist missing practice. But I kept in mind the passion that had driven me into this sport.

To remain committed, I created a disciplined routine that included training, rest, and study time, emphasizing the need for time management. Showing up for practice sessions on a regular basis and playing weekend matches necessitated determination. Every time I took to the field, I vowed to perform at my best, whether I was perfecting my batting position, enhancing bowling precision, or improving fielding instincts. This attitude gave me a sense of discipline that transcended cricket, affecting my schoolwork and personal development in a positive way.
