CAS Project Video Reflection
Over the past month, I undertook a project that allowed me to combine my passion for basketball with my desire to contribute meaningfully to society. The idea was to organize a basketball tournament where all proceeds would be donated to support cancer patients. What began as a simple idea evolved into a challenging yet rewarding experience that strengthened my leadership, teamwork, and communication skills while reinforcing the importance of perseverance and social responsibility.
The initiative aimed to bring together members of the school community through sport, promoting teamwork and healthy competition, while also supporting a global cause — cancer treatment and awareness. Seeing players, volunteers, and spectators unite for a purpose greater than the game itself was deeply fulfilling.
LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
This experience helped me identify both my strengths and areas for improvement. I realized that I excel in strategic planning and coordination — from scheduling matches to managing logistics and delegating tasks effectively. However, I also recognized that communication and networking were areas I needed to develop. Organizing the tournament required constant interaction with participants, sponsors, and volunteers, pushing me out of my comfort zone. Over time, I became more confident in expressing ideas and collaborating with different groups. This growth has inspired me to continue improving my interpersonal and leadership abilities.
LO2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills
Hosting a tournament was not without its challenges. Coordinating multiple teams, arranging referees, securing sponsorships, and managing funds demanded organization and adaptability. I had to learn how to create promotional materials, manage registrations, and handle unexpected issues such as last-minute team withdrawals. These challenges forced me to think critically and remain composed under pressure. Through this process, I developed new skills in event management, budgeting, problem-solving, and adaptability, which will serve me well in future academic and professional endeavors.
LO3: Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience
The idea for this project originated from my passion for basketball and my desire to make a social impact. I took the initiative to conceptualize the event, create a detailed plan, and oversee its implementation. This included researching how tournaments are structured, preparing a timeline, setting deadlines, and assigning responsibilities. Every aspect — from finding sponsors to ensuring fair play — required careful thought and organization. The planning stage taught me the importance of foresight, teamwork, and accountability, while reinforcing that great outcomes result from clear vision and consistent effort.
LO4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience
Throughout the project, perseverance was crucial. There were times when it felt overwhelming — dealing with scheduling conflicts, delays in sponsorship responses, or logistical obstacles. Despite these setbacks, I remained committed to ensuring the tournament’s success. Balancing academic work alongside the project required discipline and time management. Seeing the event come to life after weeks of preparation — with participants enjoying themselves and funds raised for a meaningful cause — made all the effort worthwhile and strengthened my belief in the power of persistence.
LO5: Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively
Although I initiated the idea, the success of Hoops for Hope was the result of strong collaboration. Working with others taught me the value of delegation, trust, and cooperation. Everyone contributed in different ways — some managed logistics, others handled registration or publicity. Effective communication and shared responsibility made the event run smoothly. This collaboration highlighted how collective effort amplifies impact, and that working with others often leads to better, more innovative results than working alone.
LO6: Engagement With Issues of Global Significance
Cancer is a major global health issue that affects millions of lives each year. By donating the proceeds of this tournament to a cancer care organization, the project contributed, in a small yet meaningful way, to the global fight against cancer. The initiative also promoted SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by encouraging physical activity and awareness about preventive health. This experience reminded me that local actions, no matter how small, can contribute to addressing global challenges and promoting collective well-being.
LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Ethical responsibility was a key aspect of this project. Every decision — from the fair scheduling of matches to the handling of funds — was guided by integrity and transparency. I ensured that the tournament was conducted with fairness and respect for all participants. Additionally, financial records were maintained carefully to ensure that every donation reached its intended destination. This experience emphasized the importance of ethical conduct, not only in organizing events but in every area of life.
Conclusion
Hoops for Hope was more than just a basketball tournament — it was a lesson in leadership, resilience, and empathy. The experience helped me grow as a communicator, planner, and team player while allowing me to contribute to a cause that truly matters. It taught me that passion combined with purpose can create meaningful change. Moving forward, I hope to continue organizing such initiatives that blend personal interests with positive social impact, reaffirming my belief that even small efforts can bring hope to others.
