CAS Blog 5 – Service: Cervical Vaccine Camp

LO1: Identifying My Strengths and Areas for Growth

Volunteering in the cervical vaccine camp was one of my most influential CAS experiences, as it gave me the chance to actively contribute to improving public health and community awareness. Through this experience, I became aware of my organizational and communication strengths, especially when coordinating with doctors, nurses, and patients. However, I also realized that I needed to develop a stronger understanding of medical terminology and healthcare processes to better support medical teams in the future. Recognizing this area for growth motivated me to learn more about the role of vaccines and women’s health issues.

LO2: Demonstrating That Challenges Have Been Undertaken and New Skills Developed

Assisting the doctors and volunteers during the camp allowed me to develop new coordination and responsibility skills. Managing the patient flow and supporting registration under pressure required constant focus, adaptability, and calm communication. It was challenging to maintain accuracy while managing the rush, but I learned how to handle responsibility efficiently and to stay collected in stressful medical environments.

LO3: Initiating and Planning Activities

I also had opportunities to organize and manage logistical aspects of the vaccination drive, such as handling registration forms and ensuring that patients were guided correctly through each stage. This role helped me appreciate the behind-the-scenes planning necessary for healthcare programs. By contributing ideas to streamline the registration process and volunteering to handle data, I learned how initiative and structure can make community health programs more effective.

LO4: Showing Commitment and Perseverance

Working long hours in a busy environment required a great deal of commitment and endurance. Remaining attentive throughout the day, even during periods of fatigue, taught me the importance of perseverance and responsibility. Despite being physically tiring, the experience was deeply rewarding because it showed me how dedication, even in small roles, can have a tangible impact on people’s well-being.

LO5: Working Collaboratively with Others

The success of the camp depended entirely on teamwork and cooperation. I had the privilege of working alongside doctors, nurses, and fellow volunteers who each had distinct responsibilities. Observing how smoothly the medical and non-medical teams collaborated taught me how essential clear communication, mutual respect, and coordination are in achieving common goals. It was inspiring to see how collective effort could bring a public health initiative to life.

LO6: Engagement with Global Issues

This experience made me more aware of global health concerns, particularly those related to women’s health and preventive medicine. I understood how initiatives like the cervical vaccine camp contribute to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by promoting awareness and preventing diseases that disproportionately affect women worldwide. Seeing the importance of accessible healthcare made me reflect on how public health programs can drive equality and empowerment across communities.

LO7: Recognizing and Considering the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Finally, volunteering at the camp helped me reflect deeply on the ethical aspects of healthcare. I learned the importance of confidentiality, respect, and empathy when dealing with patients, especially in sensitive medical contexts. Every interaction required mindfulness about privacy and dignity. This experience made me realize that even the smallest gestures of respect and kindness can have a powerful impact on how people perceive healthcare services
