Football has always been a sport I am passionate about, and participating in the ISSO tournaments for both U17 and U19 categories was huge opportunity for me. In the U17 tournament, I was the eldest player on the team, which placed me in a position of leadership, giving me the responsibility of my teammates who were younger and playing their first competitive matches. The U19 tournament was even more emotionally charged, as it was played on our home ground. Although we managed a significant victory in the semi-final against the most challenging team in the competition, losing the final at home and finishing second was a painful moment. Both experiences, however, shaped me deeply and provided lessons in leadership, resilience, and teamwork.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Playing as the eldest in the U17 tournament revealed to me my strength as a natural leader. I found myself guiding younger teammates, motivating them, and making crucial decisions on the field. Yet, I also learned that leadership requires balance. I figured this when I noticed how I sometimes became too harsh on my teammates because of some mistake that they had made. This taught me the importance of being patient and constructive, not just demanding. I recognized that my growth lay in learning how to encourage without discouraging, and to lead with empathy as much as with authority.
In the U19 competition, I built on this self-awareness. While the pain of losing the final was immense, I realized one of my strengths lay in helping the team maintain morale despite disappointment. I learned to channel frustration into encouragement, reminding my teammates of how far we had come and the effort we had put in. This growth focused mindset was also one that valued emotional resilience and this was what helped me become a more rounded player and teammate.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Both tournaments tested my perseverance to the fullest. In the U17 tournament, we faced repeated setbacks, and our lack of experience as a team showed. Still, I was committed to staying focused and giving my best effort, both in matches and in practice. The loss was difficult, but instead of letting it defeat me, I used it as motivation to push myself harder for the future. Being a leader, I was also committed to making my teammates feel motivated and facing my emotions helped me be at good help to them as well
The U19 tournament demanded even more resilience. Beating the strongest team in the semi-final felt like a huge victory, raising our hopes. However, the crushing defeat in the final on our home ground was emotionally draining. Perseverance in that moment meant learning to accept defeat with dignity, continuing to support my teammates, and understanding that setbacks are part of sports. The experience taught me that commitment is not just about striving to win but also about facing losses with grace and using them as fuel for future improvement.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Football is the ultimate team sport, and these tournaments showed me the true value of collaboration. In U17, many teammates were new to competitive football, and it became my responsibility to ensure they felt included and confident. I learned that collaboration sometimes means slowing down to bring others up to speed, and that the team’s growth is more important than individual performance. Working together, even if imperfectly, helped me build a foundation for future success with my teammates.
By U19, our teamwork had matured. Our semi-final victory was a direct result of collective effort wherein each player contributed fully and trusted one another to perform under pressure. The loss in the final, while painful, reinforced the lesson that collaboration is not only about winning but also about sharing both triumphs and failures as a group. It was through these shared experiences that we developed bonds that extended beyond the football field, teaching me that true collaboration builds character and community.
My ISSO football experiences for both U17 and U19 were journeys of personal growth and emotional resilience. I discovered strengths in leadership, identified areas for improvement in empathy and patience, and developed a deeper appreciation for perseverance. Most importantly, I learned the profound value of teamwork. Though the pain of losing the U19 final on home ground still lingers, it also stands as a testament to the lessons football has given me which is that true success lies in growth, resilience, and collaboration.
