Bal Mela was one of the most transformative school events I participated in. It was a day dedicated to inviting underprivileged and government school students to our campus, where they could engage in various activities, games, and interactions. My role during the event was primarily on the ground, where I assisted students in playing football, guiding them through the game, and ensuring they felt included and supported. Being closely involved with them throughout the day gave me the opportunity to see the world through their eyes and realize how meaningful such opportunities are for them. The experience was not just about playing a sport but it was about connection, empathy, and creating joy for children who do not often receive it. I got an opportunity to help students learn a sport I love which was very fulfilling as well
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Bal Mela presented several challenges that helped me grow. Many of the children had never played structured football before, which meant I had to simplify the rules, demonstrate with patience, and adjust the game so that everyone could participate equally. This was very different from playing with peers of my age and skill level, as I had to prioritize encouragement and inclusion over competition.
Through this, I developed new skills in communication and teaching. I learned how to explain the game in simpler ways, how to keep children engaged, and how to motivate them to enjoy themselves regardless of their skill level. These skills taught me that leadership is not only about performing well myself but also about enabling others to succeed and have fun.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Collaboration was essential during the event. The event was large, with many children and multiple activities happening simultaneously. I worked closely with other volunteers to organize the football sessions wherein I helped in dividing roles, ensuring fair chances, and rotating students so everyone had a chance to participate. This required constant coordination, communication, and flexibility.
The benefit of this collaboration was clear that the children should be able to enjoy themselves without confusion. Working as a team with my peers meant that we could focus on creating the best possible experience for the visitors. It also showed me how effective teamwork can amplify impact.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
Bal Mela made me reflect deeply on inequality in education and opportunities, which is a global issue. Seeing how excited the underprivileged and government school students were to simply play games and experience a new environment highlighted the disparities in access to resources and extracurricular experiences. It reminded me that many children do not receive the same opportunities for play, learning, and development that I often take for granted.
By engaging with these students, even for a day, I felt I was contributing in a small way toward addressing these inequalities. The event underscored the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunity, which are at the heart of global goals like quality education and reducing inequalities. It made me more aware of my responsibility to use the resources and opportunities I have to make a positive difference in others’ lives.
In conclusion, Bal Mela was a deeply rewarding and eye-opening experience. By working directly with underprivileged children, I faced challenges that developed my patience, adaptability, and communication skills. I also saw firsthand the benefits of collaboration in creating a memorable experience for others. Most importantly, the event connected me to broader issues of inequality and education, reminding me of the importance of empathy and social responsibility. This experience not only taught me practical skills but also left me with a stronger commitment to serving others and appreciating the opportunities I have.
