Fresher’s for Grade 11 – Project

The Fresher’s Party was a collaborative initiative by our Grade 12 class to welcome the juniors as they entered the IB Diploma Programme. As the project in-charge, I was responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of the event, ensuring it was meaningful, enjoyable, and inclusive. This project gave me the opportunity to take on leadership responsibilities while also reflecting on the importance of collaboration, perseverance, and ethical decision-making.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Leading such a large-scale project came with multiple challenges, from disagreements over themes to last-minute logistical issues. I had to make quick decisions, adapt to changing circumstances, and remain composed under pressure. This experience improved my organizational skills, adaptability, and confidence in decision-making, as I learned to lead effectively while managing setbacks.

LO3 – Initiating and planning a CAS experience
The first step of this project involved brainstorming and finalizing ideas as a group. As in-charge, I facilitated discussions where every member’s opinion was heard and respected. I learned to merge diverse perspectives into a cohesive plan while balancing limitations such as time, budget, and resources. This required careful planning, time management, and inclusivity in decision-making.

LO4 – Showing perseverance and commitment
Organizing the Fresher’s Party required continuous effort over several weeks. From decorations and music to performances and refreshments, every detail demanded attention. Even during moments of stress or conflict, I stayed committed to the process, ensuring that tasks were completed on time. My perseverance and dedication helped the team stay motivated and work toward a shared goal.

LO5 – Demonstrating the skills and benefits of working collaboratively
This event would not have been possible without teamwork. Every individual contributed—whether it was logistics, entertainment, or creative inputs. As the project in-charge, I learned to delegate tasks, value contributions, and mediate disagreements, ensuring smooth collaboration. This reinforced the importance of collective effort in achieving success.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
Although this was a school event, it connected to global values of inclusivity, diversity, and community-building. Creating a welcoming atmosphere for juniors emphasized the importance of supporting others through transitions, something universally relevant across cultures and societies.

LO7 – Recognizing and considering the ethics of choices and actions
Ethical awareness was crucial in planning this event. I ensured that our decisions respected inclusivity, fairness, and responsibility. For example, choices around performances, music, and decorations were made with sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds of the students. This strengthened my understanding of the ethical dimension of leadership and the importance of fairness in decision-making.

Overall, the Fresher’s Party was a successful CAS project that allowed me to strengthen my leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities. It not only gave juniors a sense of belonging but also allowed me to grow personally and ethically, making it one of the most rewarding CAS experiences.
