Rural Immersion

The rural immersion CAS trip to Mokhamal, Dang was one of the most exciting and memorable trips. It helped me to experience various aspects of my life which I never had. We engaged with local communities there, learn about their lifestyle, living style, schooling, earning methods and experienced some of the aspects yourself.

Throughout this trip we visited government schools and hostels, the local market, the hospital, the bank, local community people’s house, watched the sunrise, trekked to the forest, went by the lake, learned warli art and watched their tribal music and dance.

LO 1:  Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Communication and socializing was one of the strengths which allowed me to engage in different activities and communicate with local communities which helped to learn about tribal people’s lifestyle, education, employment and their culture which was very interesting. Additionally, it also helped me to gain new perspectives, develop new skills and acquire knowledge. Moreover, this experience also made me identify the developing areas where I lacked such as physical activities like trekking requiring endurance and stamina where I used to get quickly tired but I never gave up and completed the whole trek.

LO 2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Adapting to a completely different and new environment was something I found a little difficult as we were living in a rural area with basic facilities only so adjusting with minimal facilities was a challenge that I faced at the start. As a day or two passed by, we started having more fun when we engaged in different activities, talked with local people and learned about their lifestyle and experienced some of those, which helped me build resilience and adaptability and made me step out of my comfort zone to experience a whole different perspective.

LO 3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Planning was extensively required from packing our bags for the trip, researching about the lifestyle there, bringing essential items and the itinerary that we were going to follow on each day. When we visited one of the government schools, me and my group of friends then also planned to go to the bazaar and buy some items such as lipstick and nail paints for the kids and we also planned and played some fun and interesting games with them. Planning these things helped me in developing skills like creative thinking, collaboration and organizing.

LO 4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Commitment was required throughout the trip from waking early up for sunrise and trek to engaging in various experiences and activities throughout the day. The forest treks demanded a high level of perseverance as we walked through a dense forest for a long time, returned back and then also had different activities like going to local schools and hostels, visiting tribal people’s houses or making food for school students on the same day which sometimes became hectic. Also while learning about their lifestyles, the banking system and community discussions sometimes became a little boring but it was quite fruitful and meaningful too.

LO 5. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Collaboration was crucial throughout the trip. Engaging in different activities as a group, communicating with school students and local people, making warli art in teams and coordinating with people made personal connections with them, made the trip more enjoyable and interesting . When we went to the bazaar we also had to buy some masala for the food we had to prepare so we got diving into three different groups, sorted out the lists and each group picked 4-5 items which made the work more quickly and easier too. At the end of each day, we all also used to gather up at one spot and share our reflection of the particular activity that helped me gain more learning and different perspective too

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The CAS trip helped me to gain knowledge about the rural people’s lifestyle, the schooling, the income, the healthcare and all the various aspects. I observed many different challenges that they were facing such as in hospitals for fractures they need to travel more to a civil hospital as there are no doctors available at the local one’s. In addition, many other challenges such as poverty, lack of essential resources, income and healthcare made me understand how there are many aspects where rural area’s lack and how the tribal people overcome these barriers and live their lifestyle happily.

LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

This trip also raises some ethical considerations such as involvement in their activities, the impact of tourism on their communities, cultural sensitivity and resource management. We respected their actions, culture, traditional practices and their way of living a life. We also did some of these activities such as warli art, cutting the wood of the tree, learning about their banking and schooling system which also made me realize the importance of mindfulness, responsibility and ethical actions that could be incorporated in our daily lifestyle.

Overall, this CAS trip allowed me to have a whole different experience of my life. It helped me build various skills such as collaboration, communication, creative thinking, open mindedness and also provided me an opportunity of get out of my comfort zone and spend time doing some adventurous, exciting and memorable activities. It also helped me to engage in different communities, adapt in a new environment and develop different perspectives. This was an unforgettable trip I had.
