Grade 12 Farewell – CAS Reflection

The Grade 12 Student Farewell was one of my most memorable CAS experiences. It was an event that encompassed creativity, planning and collaborating to celebrate the graduating cohort of students and provide an experience worthy of a farewell. As a member of the Organising Committee (OC), my main duties consisted of event design and decorations. I wanted every aspect of the event, from the ambience to the sequence of events to portray the theme of farewell and provide the seniors with a feeling of worth and recognition.

LO2 – Taking on challenges and learning new skills

Arranging an event of this magnitude provided a number of challenges. Adjustments to the décor at the final hour, having everything ready at the correct time, and a few cake challenges all put our patience and ability to think on our feet to the test. These challenges were unexpected at first, but I learned to problem-solve, be resourceful, and apply time use efficiently. Additionally, this experience added to my ability to remain calm under pressure, while applying creative thinking (from the audience perspective) to confirm that the final set-up would still feel special for the seniors.

LO4 – Showing perseverance and commitment

It took months of preparation for the farewell, with the last few days demanding extra effort and time. There were extremely long days filled with early mornings starting at noon, followed by a series of meetings and morning calls, followed by review and revising. I remained committed to the end despite the tiredness. Each morning we worked diligently until we could see the finish line, marking our logistics map and coming together as a collective vision for the event. As we watched the seniors enjoy themselves, each ounce of effort and commitment felt worthwhile, and I was reminded that showing some grit and commitment is crucial for hosting large-scale initiatives.

Key Takeaways

Serving on the Organizing Committee for the Grade 12 Farewell was an enormously fulfilling project. It demonstrated to me that underneath every successful event is hours of planning, teamwork, and commitment. The day may have seemed extraordinary because of the decorations, music, or people’s message, but it was a day of shared feelings, laughter, and happiness. It was a true celebration of milestones together.

Certainly, I developed increased skills in regard to problem-solving and coordination, but even better was discovering the significance of providing others with extraordinary experiences. Seeing the seniors laughing, smiling, and appreciating their last school celebration brought all the hard work into perspective. It was not merely a farewell. It was about celebrating their accomplishments and how far they came as a class. Furthermore, I felt grateful to be part of the day. This experience reminded me that from creativity, collaboration, and commitment, even challenges can be turned into something beautiful.
