Asaadharan Foundation’s annual function

Introduction
The Asaadharan Foundation’s annual function was a lively celebration at a government school adopted by the NGO. Its purpose was to give recognition to students’ successes, talents and growth throughout the year, whilst also providing them the enriching experiences of being part of a community outside the classroom. The event drew parents, students, and volunteers together in an atmosphere of celebration, encouragement and belonging. As a volunteer, I was responsible for managing children, supporting set up, enabling parents into the event, and support food service. These roles contributed to the event running smoothly and successfully so everyone could enjoy it.

LO1 – Recognize own strengths and areas for development

From this experience, I could acknowledge and appreciate my strengths in organization, communication and empathy. I was able to manage a large number of children at one time, enable other volunteers to assist, and communicate respectfully with parents. My strength in patience with children and my ability to support them as they participated in the event was also a strength. I was also able to recognize areas I could strengthen, particularly in being able to multitask under a level of pressure and to think proactively to avoid delays or challenges. Being able to recognize these elements in the reflection has encouraged me to continue to build on these in future volunteer experiences.

LO 2- Show that challenges were faced; newly acquired skills were developed!

The event posed a few challenges, as one would expect when managing students of all ages. Managing the students was often challenging. Managing and decorating within limited resources proved to be a test of ingenuity and creativity. Similarly, many of the parents were from rural farm backgrounds which made communicating and providing assistance a little more difficult, particularly while dismissing students, or distributing food parcels.  Regardless, these situations helped to foster preparedness while facilitating the development of stronger organizational and problem-solving skills, adaptability and resilience, but also to stay calm and composed under pressure and still be effective.

LO 4- Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

I showed perseverance and commitment by ensuring that I continued participating throughout the ENTIRE event, from 1 PM- 9PM. Despite the long hours of my day, and some added stress, I was committed and engaged in a variety of tasks spanning from managing children, supporting preparation, coordinating parents, and assisting distributing the food packets. My day-long commitment encouraged the success and rewarding benefits of the function, for everyone involved.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of collaboration

Working together with others was a key aspect of the event’s success. Alongside other volunteers, we divided our responsibilities; some volunteers supervised and engaged with children, some coordinated with parents, while others organized the gates for distributing the identification bands and food packets, among other things. We couldn’t have managed such a large crowd without teamwork, and we ensured that no student or parent was left out. The day’s work shows the difference clear communication and all working together can make in a complicated situation, creating a smooth and well-organized event.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance

This opportunity to volunteer was related to the global issue of ensuring quality education (SDG 4). Many of the students were from disadvantaged backgrounds, where the ability to access quality educational opportunities is limited. By providing my support for the annual function, I assisted in creating an experience that celebrated learning, talent and the students’ overall development. It reaffirmed the significance of community initiatives to address educational divide and empower children with options for their educational development.

Conclusion
Volunteering at the Asaadharan Foundation annual function was a fulfilling experience that opened my eyes up to so things. I was able to continue to work on valuable skills such as organization, communication, empathy, and teamwork, but I was also challenged to stay committed and learn how to be adaptive in various moments of pressures. Above all, seeing the children’s exuberance, self-confidence, joy, and excitement reaffirmed the value of the individual equitable service in educational opportunities. This experience helped solidify my desire to be in service and gave me hope to keep working and bettering the lives of others.
