Planning and organizing the Freshers’ Party was one of the most rewarding CAS experiences for me, as it challenged me to take responsibility, collaborate with others, and think critically about the choices and actions we made.
LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
While working on this project, I realized that one of my strengths lies in organization and time management. I was able to outline the structure of the event and ensure that the different activities were scheduled effectively. At the same time, I recognized that I need to work on being more confident when presenting my ideas to the group, as I sometimes held back in discussions.
LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
A major challenge we faced was balancing creativity with practicality. Many ideas sounded exciting but weren’t feasible due to time or budget constraints. I learned how to adapt and refine ideas without losing their essence. This helped me develop problem-solving and decision-making skills that I hadn’t practiced at this level before.
LO 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
From the start, we initiated the planning process by identifying what the purpose of the Freshers’ Party should be – to welcome new students and help them feel comfortable. We then brainstormed activities, created a timeline, and assigned responsibilities within the team. This experience taught me how to take an abstract idea and turn it into a detailed, actionable plan.
LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Even when unexpected difficulties came up, such as last-minute changes to the venue setup and confusion about activity transitions, our team remained committed. We put in extra hours to rehearse the sequence and coordinate logistics. The perseverance we showed ensured that the event ran smoothly and the freshers enjoyed themselves.
LO 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
This project would not have been possible without teamwork. Each member contributed unique ideas and took responsibility for their tasks. I learned the importance of active listening and respecting different perspectives, which not only improved the quality of the event but also strengthened our group dynamic.
LO 6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Although this was a school-level event, I realized that the act of welcoming new members into a community is universally significant. Integration, inclusivity, and belonging are issues of global importance, and through this event, we created a space where everyone felt valued and included.
LO 7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
We also had to carefully consider the ethics behind the activities we chose. For example, we avoided games or performances that might make some students uncomfortable or feel excluded. We ensured that our planning was inclusive, respectful, and sensitive to cultural and individual differences.
Overall, this CAS experience taught me that planning an event is not just about organizing logistics but also about fostering values like inclusivity, collaboration, and responsibility. The Freshers’ Party was a success, and it gave me confidence and skills that I can apply to future projects, both within and beyond school.
