Experience Description:
As part of my CAS experience, I participated in a rock climbing program consisting of four training sessions. The activity aimed to develop our physical strength, problem-solving abilities, and perseverance while testing our mental endurance and fear management.
On the first day, I surprised myself by climbing the highest out of everyone in the group, even though it was my first attempt. By the second day, I managed to climb the entire wall on my very first try, and I successfully repeated this for three out of the four sessions except the very first time, when I was still figuring out the technique. This gave me a lot of confidence and motivated me to push myself further each day.
Learning Outcomes Achieved:
LO1: Identifying Own Strengths and Developing Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I discovered that one of my strengths is quick adaptability and physical coordination. I was able to understand the techniques, manage my balance, and strategize my movements effectively, which helped me climb higher than others on the very first day.
However, I also identified an area for growth, building endurance. While I performed well, longer climbs became physically draining after multiple attempts. I realised the importance of improving my stamina and core strength to sustain high-intensity activities over extended periods.
LO2: Demonstrating That Challenges Have Been Undertaken and New Skills Developed
Rock climbing presented both physical and mental challenges. At first, I struggled with finding proper footholds and maintaining grip strength, but I quickly learned how to plan my route and distribute my weight efficiently. By the second session, I developed new skills such as using my legs more effectively, improving my grip, and controlling my breathing to conserve energy.
Although I climbed higher than most on the first day, reaching the top required trusting the harness, staying calm, and focusing on technique rather than panic. Overcoming this helped me gain confidence not just in climbing but also in approaching challenges with a calm, strategic mindset.
LO4: Showing Commitment and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
Even though I performed well, rock climbing demanded consistent effort. There were times when my hands were sore and my arms were tired, but I kept pushing myself to improve. By the second day, I was determined to reach the top and succeeded on my first attempt, maintaining that streak in the following two sessions.
This experience taught me that success doesn’t just come from skill; it comes from persistence and focus. I committed myself to refining my techniques, improving each session, and challenging my own limits.
LO5: Demonstrating Skills and Recognizing the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
Although climbing is an individual activity, teamwork played a huge role in my success. My peers motivated me, guided me on better routes, and celebrated my progress, which boosted my confidence. In return, I shared tips and helped others improve their climbing techniques.
Working collaboratively created a positive and supportive environment, making the experience more enjoyable and helping everyone perform better. I realized how encouragement and collective problem-solving can push individuals to achieve beyond what they initially thought possible.
Final Reflection:
Rock climbing turned out to be one of the most rewarding CAS experiences I’ve had. It helped me recognise my strengths, overcome challenges, and refine my technical and physical abilities. Climbing the entire wall on my first attempt after just one session gave me an incredible sense of accomplishment and showed me the value of dedication and perseverance.
Beyond the personal achievement, the experience highlighted the power of team spirit and shared motivation. I walked away not just with improved climbing skills but also with greater confidence in my ability to tackle challenges, both on and off the wall.
