Experience Description:
For this CAS experience, I was part of the decor team for the school’s annual FS Got Talent event. Our role was to design, plan, and set up the stage and venue decorations to create a lively and visually appealing atmosphere for both participants and the audience.
The preparation began several weeks before the event, with brainstorming sessions, mood boards, and color palette discussions. As a team, we finalised themes, sourced materials, created handmade props, and coordinated closely with the organising and technical committees. On the day of the event, we arrived early to execute our plan: setting up backdrops, arranging lighting, and ensuring every detail looked perfect.
This experience allowed me to express my creativity, enhance my teamwork skills, and take ownership of responsibilities while contributing to the success of a large-scale event.
Learning Outcomes Achieved:
LO1: Identifying Own Strengths and Developing Areas for Growth
One of my strengths during this project was creativity and visual planning. I contributed ideas for the prop designs and colour combinations, many of which were incorporated into the final setup. However, I also realised that I needed to improve my time management and prioritisation skills. Initially, I spent too much time focusing on small details rather than completing larger tasks. Over time, I learned to manage my responsibilities more effectively and strike a balance between quality and efficiency.
LO2: Demonstrating That Challenges Have Been Undertaken and New Skills Developed
The biggest challenge we faced was executing a large-scale decor setup within a limited time. On the event day, last-minute changes from the organising team required us to adjust our original plan quickly. This forced me to think on my feet, adapt to unexpected situations, and develop problem-solving skills.
Additionally, I gained technical skills, such as understanding stage layout, working with lighting placements, and arranging decorations so they looked balanced from the audience’s perspective. By stepping outside my comfort zone, I became more confident in managing high-pressure situations.
LO3: Initiating and Planning a CAS Experience
Planning the decor for FS Got Talent required significant initiative. Our team created mood boards, finalised themes, calculated material requirements, and divided responsibilities based on individual strengths. We had to collaborate with the event coordinators and technical crew to ensure that our vision aligned with the overall event theme and logistics.
I learned the importance of planning, setting achievable goals, and coordinating multiple tasks simultaneously. Without proper planning, the decor setup would not have come together as seamlessly as it did.
LO4: Showing Commitment and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
The preparation for FS Got Talent required weeks of consistent effort. From cutting props and preparing stage designs to attending multiple early-in-school meetings, we had to stay committed to ensure everything was ready on time. On the event day, we spent hours setting up the stage, making adjustments, and double-checking every detail despite being tired.
This taught me the value of perseverance and dedication; even when things became stressful and exhausting, staying focused on the end goal kept us motivated.
LO5: Demonstrating Skills and Recognizing the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
Our decor team’s success relied heavily on teamwork. We divided tasks based on strengths: some handled cutting and painting props, others focused on arranging lighting and backdrops. We also collaborated with other committees, including the technical and stage management teams, to ensure the decor aligned with the overall event flow.
Working together taught me the importance of clear communication, respecting diverse perspectives, and compromise. At times, we disagreed on designs, but through discussion, we combined ideas to create a setup everyone was proud of. This experience showed me how collaboration brings out creativity and efficiency.
Final Reflection:
Being part of the decor team for FS Got Talent was an incredibly rewarding CAS experience. It allowed me to express creativity, develop planning and problem-solving skills, and work collaboratively with peers. I learned to manage my time, adapt to challenges, and stay committed to achieving a shared vision.
The most fulfilling moment was seeing the stage come alive exactly as we envisioned, creating an atmosphere that enhanced the entire event. This experience not only improved my practical skills but also strengthened my ability to work as part of a team, manage responsibilities, and deliver results under pressure.
