CAS Experience: School Badminton Tournament

Introduction

My CAS Activity consisted of participating in a mini school badminton tournament where I played singles and doubles. It was a test for me physically and mentally and also gave me a chance to work closely with another player in doubles. It gave me a chance to take stock of my strengths, push myself to do something new, and experience the feeling of working under pressure as a team.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Strengths identification like rally consistency, reflex quickness, and agility was made possible by the tournament. Through the tournament, I also identified areas of improvement, including serve accuracy and match endurance of long duration. Identification of such weaknesses gave direction of improvement and the drive to enhance training.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

Doubles and singles play made me uneasy because singles entailed focus in solitude while doubles involved co-operation with another individual. The adjustment of strategy from one form of the game to another was difficult but helped me be more responsive and strategy-based. Competing against great players helped me develop endurance since I needed to remain motivated even when I was unable to swallow points.

LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

Doubles play also taught me the importance of team work because it required coordination and dependency between the partner. We were required to collaborate while moving, playing tactically, and watching each other’s back in critical situations. This taught me the importance of team work and the fact that success in most sports depends on group information.

Conclusion

Overall, the badminton tournament was a great CAS experience for me to find out what I am able to do (LO1), push myself for learning how to do something new (LO2), and work with a partner (LO5). It also helped my Communicator learner profile strength because I was able to see firsthand how important good coordination and communication are in doubles and in the entire game.
