For my CAS experience for creativity from October 14th to 18th, our school hosted the 6th edition of the ISSO Football National Selection Tournament, bringing together talented student-athletes from different schools. As part of the escorting team, my role was to assist the participating students, guide them throughout the event, and help them with any concerns they had. This experience required patience, adaptability, and strong communication skills, as I had to interact with a diverse group of students while ensuring the tournament ran smoothly.
LO2: Demonstrating Challenges and Developing New Skills
Taking on the responsibility of assisting students in a large-scale event like this came with several challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was ensuring that all participants were comfortable and knew where they needed to be at any given time. Many students were unfamiliar with the school layout, and it was my job to provide clear directions and guidance. At times, this required me to think on my feet and problem-solve quickly, especially when unexpected issues arose—such as players running late for their matches or needing help with last-minute concerns.
Another challenge was adapting to different personalities and communication styles. Some students were confident and asked for help directly, while others were more reserved and hesitant to approach volunteers. I had to adjust my communication style depending on the situation, ensuring that everyone felt welcomed and supported. This experience helped me develop my adaptability and interpersonal skills, which are valuable not only in school but in any teamwork-based environment.
LO4: Showing Perseverance and Commitment
The tournament lasted for five days, and maintaining the same level of dedication and enthusiasm throughout was not easy. The long hours of escorting students, answering their questions, and ensuring that everything was running smoothly required a strong sense of responsibility and perseverance. Some days were more exhausting than others, especially when schedules changed at the last minute or when multiple teams needed assistance at the same time.
Despite the challenges, I remained committed to my role. I understood that my presence was important in ensuring the tournament’s success, and I didn’t want to let anyone down. There were moments when it would have been easier to step back and take a break, but I reminded myself of the responsibility I had taken on. This experience reinforced the value of commitment and consistency, showing me that perseverance is key to handling responsibilities effectively.
LO5: Working Collaboratively and Its Benefits
Collaboration was at the core of this experience. As part of the escorting team, I worked closely with other volunteers to ensure that all students were assisted efficiently. Clear communication was essential—we had to coordinate our efforts, divide tasks, and make sure no team was left unattended.
Additionally, I interacted with students from different schools, which required me to be open-minded and respectful of different backgrounds. It was interesting to see how each team operated differently, and I enjoyed the opportunity to engage with such a diverse group of students. By working together with my fellow volunteers and the participants, I gained a deeper appreciation for teamwork and partnership, realizing that large events like this can only succeed when everyone plays their part effectively.
This experience helped me develop important skills such as time management, collaboration, and adaptability. I also grew in my ability to communicate clearly and support others in a professional and organized manner. Being a part of this tournament was both a learning experience and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to an event that brought students together through sports.
LO7: Recognizing and Considering the Ethics of Choices and Actions
As a volunteer, I had to be aware of the ethical responsibilities that came with my role. I was representing my school, and my actions had a direct impact on how participants experienced the tournament. Ensuring that every player was treated with fairness and respect was crucial. For instance, I had to make sure that all students received equal attention and support, regardless of which school they were from.
Additionally, I had to handle situations with integrity and professionalism. There were moments when students expressed frustration—whether it was about game schedules, refereeing decisions, or logistical concerns. It was important for me to stay neutral, listen carefully, and provide assistance without taking sides. This experience made me more aware of how small actions—like remaining calm, being patient, and treating everyone with kindness—can make a big difference in creating a positive and inclusive environment.
This experience helped me develop important skills such as time management, collaboration, and adaptability. It also made me more conscious of the ethical responsibilities that come with leadership roles. Being a part of this tournament was both a learning experience and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to an event that brought students together through sports.
