CAS trip -Ambapani

From December 16th to 21st, 2024, I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Ambapani, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself in nature, learn about rural life, and understand the deep-rooted cultural traditions of the village. This trip was not just about exploring a new environment; it was a transformative experience that challenged me, strengthened my skills, and provided valuable insights into sustainability and ethical responsibility. Throughout this CAS experience, I demonstrated the following learning outcomes:

LO1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

One of the key realizations from this experience was identifying my own strengths and recognizing areas where I needed improvement. I discovered that I am adaptable to new environments, as I quickly adjusted to life in a rural setting, which was very different from my daily routine. I also noticed that I had a natural curiosity for learning about sustainable living and traditional practices, which helped me engage deeply with the activities.

learning intricate skills such as Warli painting and bamboo craftsmanship required patience and attention to detail, which I realized I needed to work on. This experience pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace new learning opportunities.

LO2: Overcoming Challenges and Developing New Skills

Throughout the six-day trip, I faced several challenges, but each one became an opportunity for growth. One of the biggest challenges was adjusting to the absence of modern conveniences—no access to technology, simple living conditions, and a routine centered around nature. At first, it was difficult, but soon, I learned to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of rural life.

Additionally, I developed new skills such as:

  • Sustainable farming practices through cleaning, plucking, and sowing in nearby fields.
  • Warli painting, which required creativity, precision, and patience.
  • Mud Lipan (a traditional wall art technique), which taught me how artistic expression can be deeply connected to culture.
  • Bird identification and understanding migration patterns, which helped me appreciate the delicate balance of nature.

Each of these skills required dedication and a willingness to learn from the villagers, who had mastered these techniques over generations.

LO3: Initiating and Planning a CAS Experience

This trip was not just about participation but also about taking initiative and planning effectively. Each day had a structured schedule filled with different activities, and I had to manage my time, prepare for the tasks ahead, and actively participate in discussions and reflections.

Additionally, during the Aashramsala visit, we interacted with the village students, engaging them in games and storytelling to create a more interactive learning experience. These moments reinforced the importance of initiative, organization, and leadership in making a CAS experience meaningful.

LO4: Demonstrating Perseverance and Commitment

The daily schedule on this trip was physically and mentally demanding. Waking up early for river baths, treks, and yoga, followed by hands-on activities such as farming, construction, and artistic work, required dedication and endurance. Some days were particularly exhausting, especially after long treks or engaging in strenuous activities like mud work. However, I remained committed and pushed myself to fully engage with every activity, knowing that each one was a valuable learning experience.

Even when some tasks felt repetitive, such as farming or painting, I reminded myself that perseverance is key to mastering any skill. This experience reinforced my ability to stay committed to a task despite challenges, which is a skill that extends beyond CAS and into academics and personal life.

LO5: The Power of Collaboration

Collaboration was at the heart of this experience. Whether it was working in groups to collect plastic, painting together, or teaming up for adventure activities, every task required effective teamwork. I learned to communicate better, listen actively, and contribute my skills in a way that benefited the group.

A memorable example of collaboration was during the Baaj-making activity, where we had to prepare a meal using the leaves we collected from the trek. The teamwork and collective effort made the experience both enjoyable and efficient.

This trip showed me that teamwork enhances learning, as I was able to gain insights from my peers and the villagers, making the experience richer and more engaging.

LO6: Engaging with Global Issues

This trip was deeply connected to global issues such as sustainability, waste management, and rural development. Through various activities, I gained a better understanding of:

  • The importance of eco-tourism and how it benefits both the environment and local communities.
  • The impact of plastic waste on rural ecosystems and how proper waste disposal is crucial in preserving nature.
  • The significance of sustainable farming and self-sufficient lifestyles, which are becoming increasingly relevant in a world facing climate change and food security challenges.

One of the most eye-opening experiences was meeting with villagers and discussing the differences between rural and urban life. It made me realize the privileges of city life and how rural communities have to work harder for access to basic necessities like education and healthcare. This reinforced my awareness of economic inequality and the need for sustainable development solutions.

LO7: Recognizing the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Ethics played a significant role in this experience, particularly in understanding how our actions impact both nature and people. The villagers relied on natural resources for their daily lives, which made me more conscious of how urban lifestyles contribute to deforestation, pollution, and resource depletion.

Additionally, the Aashramsala visit gave me a firsthand understanding of how education is a privilege that not everyone has easy access to. The students there were eager to learn despite limited resources, which made me reflect on my own educational opportunities and how I can contribute to creating better learning environments for others.

This experience taught me the importance of making ethical and responsible choices, whether it’s reducing waste, supporting sustainable businesses, or being mindful of cultural traditions.
