Bal Mela was a vibrant, one-day service event organized by our school to bring joy, learning, and inspiration to students from over ten visiting government schools. As part of the stage team, my friends and I took on the responsibility of keeping the energy alive through continuous dance performances. Our goal was to make the children feel included and celebrated—and seeing them join us on stage, laughing and dancing, was incredibly heartwarming. The event was filled with diverse activities such as art and craft , tattoo painting , Newspaper flower and Hats, Nail art etc run by different student groups, and it turned out to be a meaningful and successful day for everyone involved.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through Bal Mela, I discovered my strength in building a lively connection with children using dance as a medium. I was able to bring smiles to their faces and create an atmosphere of joy. However, I realised I need to develop better endurance and voice projection to keep the energy consistent and effectively engage with a large audience over a long duration.
LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, develop- ing new skills in the process.
Dancing nonstop for hours in front of a large and diverse audience was both physically and mentally demanding. Maintaining high energy, staying in sync with my group, and engaging the children at the same time tested my stamina and focus. I also had to learn how to quickly adapt to unexpected situations, like changes in the music or technical delays. These challenges helped me improve my coordination, adaptability, and confidence while performing in a live setting.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience:
Although we didn’t plan the entire event, our dance segment required coordination—rehearsing, planning the sequence, and keeping transitions smooth. Collaboratively, we made sure everything ran seamlessly on stage.
LO4 – Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences.
Performing for hours and staying motivated throughout required real commitment. There were moments when fatigue started to set in, but we stayed committed to our role because we knew the children were looking forward to the energy and excitement we brought. Even during breaks, we remained engaged, encouraging the kids to dance and enjoy themselves. Our dedication paid off when we saw their joyful reactions.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively.
Working with my friends made the event more enjoyable and effective. We supported each other on stage and shared responsibilities, which made the long performance feel lighter.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
The event gave me a deeper understanding of the inequality that exists in access to education and joyful experiences. Many of the children who attended came from under-resourced government schools, and for some, this event was a rare opportunity to express themselves freely and simply have fun. By performing for them and dancing alongside them, I realized how small actions—like sharing time, energy, and positivity—can make a big difference. It reminded me that global issues like inequality and lack of access aren’t just statistics; they are real and personal. This experience made me more aware of my own privilege and inspired me to continue using my skills in ways that can uplift others.
LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
Throughout the event, we were mindful of our responsibility as performers and role models. We carefully selected songs and dance moves that were appropriate for a younger audience, ensuring everything we did was respectful and inclusive. It was important to create a space where every child, regardless of background, felt comfortable and welcomed. This experience helped me reflect on how even small decisions—like our choice of music or the way we spoke—can impact others deeply. It taught me to always consider the ethical side of my actions, especially when working with vulnerable communities.
