FS Got Talent is an annual interschool competition which includes band, solo singing, drum, dance and various other performances by students from MYP all the way to DP. It was a spectacular event, showcasing the talents of a plethora of students, providing them with an opportunity to live up to their potential. It was a day of double celebration for me personally, since not only did our band secure the first position, but so did I in the solo singing category.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
The entire experience, from long-hour band practices to actually performing on stage, was very fulfilling. I realised how much I underestimated my abilities, talents and potential. Through the experience, I came to acknowledge my singing abilities, as well as my passion for music. I was amazed to see how confidently I was able to sing on stage, when since childhood I had always been afraid of performing in front of a large crowd. In terms of areas for growth, I identified that I was unable to sing the high notes in a few songs effortlessly, and therefore needed more discipline and consistency everyday in my practice for this art.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
There was definitely the challenge of managing two performances back to back on the stage (which happened since a few participants after my solo didn’t show up on the day). Just after my solo singing performance, we had our band performance. On top of that, the songs included in both the performances were of complete opposite genres- one slow and mellow, while the other very rock. It helped me develop my stage presence and to not panic in uncontrollable situations. Apart from this, I learnt how to balance different areas of my life- (here) managing school studies along with the band’s practice sessions.
LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
This learning outcome was highlighted the most for me personally throughout the event. This was one of my firsts of working together with a band for a competition, and there was something to learn from each of my fellow band members. I realised the importance of helping each other, and working out a solution collectively when faced with a problem, instead of putting all the load in the hands of one. Since each person is unique and the way they think different, there were many disagreements at various points of time, but by effective communication we were able to overcome them. Moreover, I was a new student at the school, and being in the band definitely provided me with a sense of community. Our band is still intact, and I am sure we are going to do many more performances, learning and growing through it all.
