The International Schools Sports Organization (ISSO) Football Tournament is an annual event that brings together IB schools from across the country to compete in a highly competitive and collaborative football championship. This tournament provides student-athletes with an opportunity to showcase their sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership skills, while also experiencing the challenges and discipline required in high-level competitions.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Participating in ISSO allowed me to assess my abilities as a football player, recognizing both my strengths and areas for improvement. One of my strengths was strategic gameplay and teamwork, as I was able to anticipate movements and coordinate effectively with my teammates. Additionally, my endurance and perseverance helped me stay focused throughout intense matches. However, I realized that I needed to improve my decision-making under pressure and defensive skills. This experience motivated me to refine my techniques and work on my reaction speed and adaptabilityduring high-stakes moments.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
The ISSO tournament was highly competitive, pushing me beyond my comfort zone. One major challenge was playing against strong teams with different playing styles, which required quick adaptability and strategic thinking. Another challenge was maintaining mental resilience—after losing a match, it was crucial to stay motivated and not let setbacks affect performance. Through this experience, I developed new skills, such as improving my composure under pressure, refining my communication on the field, and enhancing my stamina through disciplined training. These challenges strengthened my overall abilities as a football player and as a team member.
LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Preparing for ISSO required months of rigorous training, balancing academics and football practice. There were days when exhaustion set in, but my commitment to the team kept me going. I had to stay disciplined with my training schedule, focusing on improving my weaknesses while maintaining my strengths. Additionally, during the tournament, we faced tough matches that tested our endurance and determination. Regardless of the outcome, I remained dedicated to giving my best effort in every game, demonstrating perseverance and commitment to both personal and team growth.
LO5: Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Football is a team sport, and success in ISSO depended on effective collaboration and coordination with teammates. Communication, trust, and shared strategies were key to executing plays successfully. I learned the importance of understanding each player’s strengths and weaknesses, adjusting my gameplay accordingly to support the team’s overall performance. Working collaboratively not only helped us perform better on the field but also strengthened my ability to work in a diverse and dynamic team environment.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
ISSO emphasized the importance of fair play, respect, and sportsmanship. As a player, I had to ensure that my actions were ethical—respecting opponents, following the rules, and maintaining integrity in both victory and defeat. There were moments when tensions ran high during competitive matches, but staying composed and handling situations with respect and professionalism was crucial. This experience reinforced my understanding of ethical decision-making in sports, teaching me that playing with honesty and respect is just as important as winning.
