FSMUN 11.0

FSMUN is an event that FS organizes every year, which is open to major schools and colleges from Surat and outside as well. It comprises of various UN committees as well as Lok Sabha, where delegates gather and discuss upon major ongoing issues of the real world. I had heard a lot about FSMUN and always wished to attend it, and this year I got the opportunity to do so. Although I didn’t win anything, the entire experience was worth it. Afterall, it’s true what they say- it’s not the outcome, it’s the journey that truly matters.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

This was my second MUN, and my first in the committee I had chosen-WTO. There were definitely challenges along the way- providing strong comebacks to any allegations against my country as well as collaborating with other countries. MUNs also require immense research, which was definitely a challenge I faced- trying to manage doing that along with studies and band practice (our band was to perform in one of the social event for FSMUN). However, the challenges were all worth facing since I learnt a lot- communication, collaboration, time-management and most importantly developed my critical thinking skills.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.

This MUN, although very insightful, was definitely tiring- being present in all the committee sessions (from morning till evening), amidst the constant pressure that comes from other countries. I had to stay up late, researching and preparing my speeches. Despite all the difficulties, I knew that actively and fully participating in this event would definitely help me grow and hence I was willing to give it my all. And I am glad I did.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance.

MUNs are all about discussing global issues and bringing out a resolution. Specifically, my committee’s (WTO) agenda was discussing how sanctions and trade barriers affect the global economy. Through thorough research about my country’s policies regarding this matter, as well as listening to other countries about theirs, I gained great insights into this topic. The discussions inspired me to stay more consistent with learning about issues around the globe and brainstorm ways to eradicate them.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

We don’t always get to choose the country we wish to represent in a committee, and that happened with me this time. So, it was possible for me to not agree to the policies of my country. However, for my ethical participation, I had to stick to Germany’s stance, even though I personally disagreed with the country’s beliefs. Moreover, I had to be very mindful that along with sharing my country’s points of view, I respected other countries’ policies and actions.

Overall, I believe an MUN teaches one great lessons. I learnt how to be patient, respectful and open to varied opinions, communicating confidently, along with many others. Although I went home with only a certificate of participation, I will always carry the lessons that I learnt from this MUN through my life.
