Bal Mela was a fulfilling experience where I had the opportunity to teach nearby school students how to shoot a basketball. I guided them on how to hold the ball correctly and release it into the basket. This activity not only helped the students develop new skills but also improved my communication and teaching abilities. It was rewarding to see their progress and excitement as they learned something new.
LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Teaching basketball allowed me to recognize my strengths and areas for improvement. I realized that I had good patience and the ability to break down skills into simple steps, which made it easier for the students to understand. However, I also noticed that I needed to improve my ability to give quick feedback and adjust my teaching style for different learning speeds. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and clear communication when guiding others.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the biggest challenges was teaching students who had never played basketball before. Many struggled with handling the ball, and some were hesitant to try. I had to find different ways to explain and demonstrate techniques so they could understand better. Through this, I developed my problem-solving and leadership skills. I also learned how to motivate students and encourage them to keep trying, even when they faced difficulties.
LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Teamwork was essential in making this activity successful. I worked alongside other volunteers to ensure that every student received attention and guidance. We coordinated our teaching methods to keep the learning process smooth and engaging. By supporting each other, we were able to create a fun and encouraging environment for the students. This experience showed me that collaboration leads to more effective teaching and a better learning experience for everyone.
Bal Mela was a great learning experience that helped me grow both as a mentor and a team player. Teaching basketball required patience, adaptability, and teamwork, all of which I developed through this activity. Seeing the students improve and enjoy themselves made the effort truly worthwhile.
