HDP: AS – Band

As part of the Holistic Development Programme, I played the drums in the school band for an entire academic year, rehearsing for three hours every cycle. This experience allowed me to refine my musical abilities, collaborate with fellow musicians, and contribute to various school performances and competitions.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
While I was confident in my drumming skills, playing in a structured band setting required me to develop better coordination with other instruments. I worked on controlling dynamics, improving transitions, and adapting my playing style to suit different genres. Over time, I became more aware of how small adjustments in tempo and dynamics could enhance the overall performance. This also helped me understand the requirement for raw drumming techniques which is a growth for all drummers. I frequently practice these techniques at home.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
A key challenge was ensuring perfect synchronization with the band, especially during live performances where there was no room for error. I had to train myself to follow cues from the lead musicians and adjust my timing based on their playing. Additionally, I explored new drumming techniques to suit different styles of music, expanding my repertoire beyond what I was previously comfortable with.

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience:
As a band, we carefully planned and selected songs for various occasions, such as school assemblies, cultural events, and competitions. Each event required detailed preparation, from deciding the setlist to scheduling rehearsals and refining transitions. I actively participated in discussions about song arrangements, ensuring that my drumming complemented the rest of the band.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:
Balancing academics with band practice was challenging, but I remained dedicated throughout the year. Some rehearsals were exhausting, especially when we had to repeatedly practice complex sections of a song. However, my commitment to improving and delivering a polished performance kept me motivated. Over time, I saw the direct results of this persistence in our well-coordinated performances.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively:
Playing in a band required strong teamwork and communication. I had to remain in sync with the vocalists, guitarists, and keyboardists while following the conductor’s lead. There were times when adjustments had to be made mid-performance, and staying attentive to my fellow musicians was crucial. This experience reinforced the importance of collaboration, not just in music but in any team-based setting.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance:
Music is a universal medium that bridges cultural and social differences. Through this programme, I realized the importance of arts education in developing creativity and self-expression. In a world where academic achievement often takes priority, I understood the need to preserve and promote artistic pursuits, as they contribute significantly to personal growth and well-being.

This experience was both challenging and rewarding, helping me grow as a musician and a team player. It deepened my appreciation for the effort behind every performance and reinforced my passion for music as a powerful form of expression.

LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

This programme wasn’t just about rehersing about our skills it was also exhibitting them for different ocassions inside and outside schools which included events like independence day, kala kriti, opening ceremonies, etc. For this we had to make different chocies and actions such that the audience enjoyed the performances, and we are also able to ethically keep our choices of songs related with religion and sequences in perspective since music is something which can also result in offense to a certain audiences.
