Creativity, Activity, Service
Experiencing life in a rural setting provides invaluable insight into different cultures, lifestyles, and challenges faced by local communities. As part of my CAS experience, I embarked on a five-day rural immersion trip to Kilad, Navsari, where I engaged in various activities encompassing creativity, activity, and service. During the trip, we helped villagers with farming, learned about their language and daily habits, and participated in physical activities such as rambling, trekking up a mountain, and taking a refreshing river bath. Additionally, we shared meals with the villagers in their homes, painted the walls of government schools, played with school children, taught them dances, and provided them with food. A highlight of the trip was learning the traditional Warli painting style from a local artist and creating our own artworks. This experience not only allowed me to serve and learn but also to challenge myself physically and creatively.
Learning Outcomes (LOs)
- LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth: Throughout the trip, I recognized my ability to adapt to a rural environment and engage with the villagers effectively. However, I also noticed that I needed to improve my resilience, especially when working in physically demanding conditions such as farming and trekking. This experience pushed me to develop greater endurance and patience.
- LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process: Learning Warli painting, working on a farm, and navigating through a trek were all new experiences that required perseverance. Overcoming these challenges allowed me to develop a deeper appreciation for rural life and acquire skills that I had never explored before.
- LO 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience: Our trip required careful planning and coordination, from organizing activities for the children to preparing materials for school painting. The structured approach to planning made the trip smooth and efficient, highlighting the importance of foresight in executing meaningful service initiatives.
- LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences: Spending five days in a rural village away from modern conveniences required a strong commitment to adaptability and perseverance. Whether it was adjusting to different living conditions, engaging in strenuous activities, or ensuring that our service initiatives were impactful, this experience reinforced my dedication to seeing a project through from start to finish.
- LO 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively: Throughout the trip, teamwork was crucial. Whether painting a school, farming with the villagers, or trekking up a mountain, collaboration with my peers made the tasks more enjoyable and efficient. The ability to work cohesively with a group was a valuable takeaway from this experience.
- LO 6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance: This experience deepened my understanding of rural life and the educational challenges faced by children in underserved communities. Teaching the students, providing them with food, and improving their school environment reinforced my awareness of the disparities in access to resources and education.
- LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions: During the trip, I became more aware of the ethical implications of our actions and the responsibility that comes with engaging in service activities. While assisting the villagers, I reflected on the importance of approaching service with respect and humility, ensuring that our contributions were meaningful rather than performative. Additionally, working with children and painting schools made me consider the long-term impact of our efforts, emphasizing the need for sustainable and ethical volunteer work. This experience reinforced my commitment to ethical decision-making in service and beyond.
