Enrichmnt; – Service

Service is a powerful way to create meaningful change, and through Enrichmnt; I have had the opportunity to make a real impact. What started as a small initiative co-founded by my two friends and me has grown into a student-led organization with over 50 members, teaching in eight government schools across Surat. Our mission is simple: to bridge the educational gap by providing interactive and practical learning experiences to students who struggle with basic subjects. Every Saturday, we dedicate our time to improving the quality of education for these students, ensuring they gain the knowledge and skills they deserve. This experience has been challenging yet deeply fulfilling, shaping me as both a leader and a learner.

LO1 – Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

Through my role in Enrichmnt; I have discovered my strengths in leadership, organization, and adaptability. I have always been passionate about service, but this initiative helped me refine my ability to communicate effectively with students and volunteers. Teaching in government schools required patience and creativity—many students struggled with fundamental concepts, and I had to find innovative ways to engage them.

At the same time, I recognized areas for improvement. Managing a growing initiative required strong time management skills, as balancing academics and Enrichmnt; was sometimes overwhelming. Additionally, I learned that delegation is crucial—initially, I tried to oversee everything myself, but as we expanded, trusting my team members to take responsibility became essential for sustainability.

LO2 – Taking on Challenges and Developing New Skills

One of the biggest challenges was adapting teaching methods to make learning more engaging and effective. Many students in Grade 6 struggled with basic math and English, so using conventional teaching styles wasn’t enough. We had to design interactive activities, incorporate games and real-life examples, and even modify lesson plans on the spot to meet their needs. This experience developed my problem-solving skills, as I had to think quickly and creatively to keep students engaged.

Another challenge was managing an expanding team. As we grew to 50+ volunteers across multiple schools, ensuring smooth coordination became crucial. I had to improve my leadership and teamwork skills to handle scheduling, communication, and session planning efficiently. These experiences taught me the importance of adaptability and perseverance in overcoming obstacles.

LO3 – Initiating and Planning the Experience

Starting Enrichmnt; from scratch required extensive planning. My friends and I had to establish a structure, decide on a curriculum, recruit volunteers, and coordinate with school authorities. As we expanded, we divided our team into different departments, including HR, Events, Curriculum, and Marketing, to ensure smooth operations.

Planning also involved working with branch managers who communicated with school principals and arranged weekly sessions. Organizing these sessions every Saturday required clear timelines, lesson structures, and contingency plans in case volunteers couldn’t attend. Initially, managing everything felt overwhelming, but as I developed better planning and delegation skills, our sessions became more efficient and structured.

LO4 – Showing Perseverance and Commitment

A key part of Enrichmnt; is our weekly commitment to teaching, no matter how busy our schedules get. Consistency is what truly makes an impact, and ensuring we show up for these students every Saturday has required strong dedication. There were times when managing schoolwork alongside this initiative felt overwhelming, but knowing that these students depend on us for learning kept me motivated.

There were also setbacks, such as school holidays affecting attendance or students struggling to grasp topics even after multiple sessions. However, instead of giving up, we adapted our teaching strategies, broke down concepts into simpler steps, and found new ways to explain lessons. This perseverance has made me more resilient and strengthened my commitment to service.

LO5 – Working Collaboratively

Collaboration is the backbone of Enrichmnt;. From working with my co-founders to leading a team of 50+ volunteers, I have learned how important teamwork, communication, and delegation are in running a successful initiative.

One challenge was aligning different teaching styles among volunteers. Everyone had their own way of explaining concepts, and standardizing our lesson plans was necessary for consistency. We held training sessions and discussions to ensure all volunteers were on the same page. Additionally, coordinating with branch managers and school principals required clear communication to manage schedules and maintain good relationships with the schools.

By working together, we’ve been able to expand our impact, reach more students, and refine our approach to teaching and managing sessions effectively.

LO6 – Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

The lack of access to quality education is a global issue, and through Enrichmnt;, we are working towards UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. Education is the foundation for opportunity and growth, yet many students in government schools struggle with basic literacy and numeracy.

This initiative has made me more aware of the educational divide and the privileges many of us take for granted. Our students do not have access to private tutors, learning apps, or even proper study materials, making our initiative even more essential. By providing structured lessons and interactive learning, we are directly contributing to bridging this gap and empowering these children with knowledge that will shape their future.

LO7 – Ethics of Choices and Actions

Running Enrichmnt; also comes with ethical responsibilities. One of the biggest considerations has been ensuring that our teaching methods are inclusive and respectful of the students’ backgrounds and learning abilities. We had to ensure that we never discourage students, even when they struggle, and instead create an environment where they feel supported and motivated to learn.

Another ethical consideration is sustainability. Since we have received an official permit to teach in schools for two years, we need to ensure that Enrichmnt; continues beyond our own time in school. This is why we focus on recruiting new volunteers and structuring the organization so that it remains self-sustaining for future batches of students and teachers.

All in all, being a part of Enrichmnt; has been one of the most transformative experiences for me. It has helped me develop leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and resilience, while also deepening my commitment to service. Seeing the impact of education firsthand has reinforced my belief that knowledge is the most powerful tool for change.

While the journey has had challenges, from managing volunteers to adapting lessons, every struggle has helped me grow. This experience has shown me that small actions—like dedicating a few hours every Saturday—can create lasting change. I am excited to see how Enrichmnt; continues to expand and how we can empower even more students with the education they deserve.
